Whitland hold their nerve to secure the silverwareWhitland Seconds are the Alec Colley Cup winners for 2015 as they fought back from a 22-run tea-time deficit to beat their counterparts from Haverfordwest, who were seeking a hat-trick of wins, by three runs as fortunes ebbed and flowed throughout an absorbing clash that was a credit to both clubs.

Whitland battle back after slow start

Whitland skipper Wayne Jones won the toss and elected to bat first but his decision looked to have back-fired as both he and Ed John were back in the pavilion with only 15 on the board as Avron Roulstone struck twice with the aid of excellent catches by James Morris and young keeper Will Scriven.

Geraint Jones departed for a duck to the wily slow stuff of Nigel Morgan but Raff Williams and Nathan Evans added 39 before the former was out with two sixes in his 34, bowled by Morris.
Nathan Evans batted well for his 27 before he also departed to Morris - but had shared a half-century stand with Nico Setaro (27 not out) as Whitland ended their 20 overs on a score of 126 for 5 wickets.

Cole’s on fire for The Town

Whitland hold their nerve to secure the silverware
Haverfordwest made an even worse start as they lost Sean Williams for a duck and big-hitting Kern Cunningham departed first ball with the aid of a good catch from Gethin Benjamin, both balls bowled by canny veteran Paul Webb.

But opening bat Dan Cole was clearly in a rich vein of form as he stroked six fours in his half century scored from the first 57 runs and continued in a stand of 59 with Dan Field, who scored eight runs before being bowled by Connor Bowen.

Avron Roulstone smote a huge six alongside a couple of fours in his 24 runs as he and Cole belted a speedy 50 together before Bowen clean bowled him, but Cole continued merrily on his way to three figures and ended up on 102 not out, a superb innings that included 15 boundaries.

Whitland skipper Wayne Jones used his wealth of experience to good effect as he grabbed 3 for 4 in bowling two late overs that helped restrict The Town's first innings lead to 22 runs.

Ed shows his class for Whitland

Whitland needed a good start to make up the deficit but suffered a body blow when skipper Wayne Jones was run out for a duck with only six runs on the board

But Ed John showed what a classy player he is in a productive partnership of 100 runs with Geraint Jones before the latter departed, caught by Simon Williams off James Morris for 43, including two sixes and two fours.

John went on to score 50 in 39 balls and contributed an accomplished 80 not out which contained eight fours as Morris was the only wicket-taker in a 1 for 57 spell - and Haverfordwest were left to score 120 runs for victory in the final innings.

Webb and Phillips bowl Whitland to victory

Whitland hold their nerve to secure the silverware
Dan Cole hit two boundaries from the first over but then was adjudged lbw to Connor Bowen before Paul Webb played a massive role for Whitland, taking out the cream of The Town bowling in a 4 for 23 stint that effectively broke the back of the batting line up.

Roulstone again hit big for The Town but was bowled by Geraint Phillips for 27, including another powerhouse six that smashed the car windscreen of a Whitland life member!

Phillips finished with an excellent 4 for 15 haul as the tension increased, including the vital last wicket after Haverfordwest needed four runs from the final three balls.

Dan Cole was deservedly chosen as man of the match for what was believed to be the first century in an Alec Colley Final and after Whitland’s delighted skipper Wayne Jones raised the Alec Colley Cup aloft both teams were rightly congratulated by Tony Scourfield, the County Club chairman, for making this a final to remember for all the right reasons!
