Delighted Bluebirds edge seven-goal thriller at Chepstow Town to reach quarter finals

PHOTO: Ritchie Lewis missed a penalty, but made amends by scoring the fourth goal for the triumphant Bluebirds with a terrific free kick. Haverfordwest County won a thriller at Chepstow Town to reach the quarter finals of the Welsh Cup.

The pitch cut-up badly and it was backs to the wall stuff as the Bluebirds clung on for a dramatic 4-3 victory. Both sides missed a penalty apiece and the homesters finished this no-nonsense cup-tie with ten-men.

This victory had an added incentive as it was worth at least £6,000 to the Bluebirds for reaching the quarter-final stage of this prestigious cup competition.

Ben Steele was brought into the Bluebirds' side as striker Jack Christopher was suspended and skipper Chris Holloway, and the young poacher rewarded Mickey Ellis' faith in him by scoring early in the first half to give the Bluebirds the perfect start to this cup-tie.

Two-nil cushion

In fact, Haverfordwest County grabbed two goals in the space of a nine-minute spell to settle their early nerves, the striker bagging an opportunist goal on 15 minutes, after the keeper parried a shot and Steele finished instinctively from an acute angle.

On 24 minutes the visitors struck again in fortuitous fashion, Steffan Williams whipped in a dangerous cross from the right and a Chepstow defender tucked the ball into his own net at the near post.

Phil Cattlin had an outstanding game playing just in of the back four, mopping up any loose possession, and his aerial strength was also evident, whilst goalkeeper Peter Blain produced two-top drawer saves to make sure the visitors still had a 2-0 lead at half time.

Terrific tenacity

After the break substitute Anton Owen slotted home the visitors' third and at that stage it looked as though Chepstow were dead and buried.

But they showed terrific tenacity to fight back with goals from Mark Dunn and Jason Thorne, and they also missed from the spot. Ritchie Lewis also struck a penalty wide before adding a brilliant fourth for the visitors, the midfielder making amends by scoring with a direct free kick from the edge of the box.

Five minutes from full time and Bluebirds' substitute Anthony Finselbach put the ball into his own net, but Haverfordwest clung on for an all-important win.

Bluebirds give fans plenty of festive cheer after easily overcoming Bridgend

Haverfordwest County 5 – Bridgend Town 0

Steffan Williams tucks home the opener.Haverfordwest County served up a delightful five-goal festive treat for their fans at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

This was the only game that survived the horrendous weather that has struck the country; the rain was driving from the first minute to the last.

However, the Bluebirds played some quality football in atrocious conditions and this win has put them in third spot, just two points behind leaders AFC Porth.

The homesters grabbed three goals in the first half hour and scored two further goals in the second half to run out comfortable winners.

Clean sheet and three precious points

Jack Christopher makes no mistake for his side's second goal.Goalkeeper Peter Blain will be happy that he kept another clean sheet and manager Mickey Ellis will be pleased his side bagged another precious three points in the race for the title, and this excellent win had the added bonus of improving the Bluebirds' goal-difference.

Steffan Williams opened the scoring when he cleverly latched onto Ritchie Lewis' cross from the right and deftly slotted home.

Minutes later and Christopher added the second, slipping the ball past keeper Richard Morgan from the edge of the 18 yard area.

Chris O'Sullivan bagged a third goal when his direct free kick from distance easily beat Bridgend keeper Morgan diving to his left. This solid strike deservedly earned Haverfordwest County a three-goal cushion at half time.

Lewis strikes twice

Chris O'Sullivan's direct free kick from distance finds the back of the net Just after the break and the homesters were awarded a cast iron penalty by referee Mathew Mercer. Christopher broke down the right and put in a superbly-timed pass for O'Sullivan to strike a rising shot against the crossbar, but Sully was then impeded by the visiting keeper.

O'Sullivan took responsibility and smashed his effort from 12 yards against the right hand post, but Ritchie Lewis quickly followed up and calmly smashed home the rebound with aplomb.

If that was a high-quality finish then four minutes later Lewis scored a cracking fifth goal to complete the rout. From Christopher's floated by-line cross Lewis struck a fierce left-footed volley crashing into the back of the net.

Blain pulled off a brilliant stop with his leg to deny Bridgend's Jordan Edwards and the visitors' substitute also struck the woodwork as they had to settle for nothing at the final whistle.

Haverfordwest County's next league game is on Saturday, 29th December, away to Cambrian & Clydach.

Impressive win on the road thanks to goals scored by Christopher and Sully

Barry Town 0 – Haverfordwest County 2

Jack Christopher bagged the best goal of the season so far for the Bluebirds in the opinion of assistant manager Wayne Jones.First-half goals from Jack Christopher and a successful penalty by Chris O'Sullivan earned Haverfordwest County an excellent win at Jenner Park over Barry Town, who are fourth in the table so the match was a typical six-pointer in terms of importance.

This was the only game played in division one as the others were casualties of bad weather and this excellent result sees Haverfordwest move into fifth in the table, just five points behind leaders AFC Porth, whilst the Bluebirds have a game in hand.

Best goal

Assistant manager Wayne Jones described the first goal that was scored in the 24th minute as “the best goal that we've scored so far this season”.

Excellent build-up play by the Bluebirds saw Christopher strike a low drive that flew in the far corner to give his side the dream start they were craving for.

Sully spot on

Good solid defence restricted Barry's expected fight back and fifteen minutes later the lead was increased when Steffan Williams cut in off the right wing, made inroads into the box before being upended for a definite penalty.

Chris O'Sullivan kept his nerve to convert in the bottom right hand corner and give the visitors a 2-0 cushion at the interval.

The second half saw the Bluebirds keep their shape as Ricky Watts, Lee Bevan, Anthony Finselbach and Anthony Facciuto covered Peter Blain well and made life difficult for Barry, who became more and more frustrated as time went on.

Holloway sees red

However, the Bluebirds suffered a body blow when they had skipper Chris Holloway sent off for receiving a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge.

But although down to ten-men the Bluebirds stayed strong and will be pleased that they kept a clean sheet to gain an impressive three points on their travels.

Next Saturday, December 22nd Haverfordwest County entertain Bridgend Town at the Conygar Bridge Meadow, kick off is at 2.30pm.

Welsh Cup Third Round:

Ritchie Lewis scored twice in Bluebirds' cup win in North Wales. Inspirational Lewis fires Bluebirds into the next round

Llandudno Junction 2 –
Haverfordwest County 3

Haverfordwest County have reached the last 16 of the Welsh Cup after an inspirational performance by man of the match Ritchie Lewis secured a deserved victory at Llandudno Junction.

The left-side midfielder had one of his best games in a Bluebirds jersey, assisting with the first goal and scoring twice to ensure his side overcame a resilient North Wales outfit.

Early lead

The visitors took an early lead in the fourth minute when Steffan Williams headed home a cross from Lewis.

The homesters equalised four minutes later when John Blundell pounced to beat Peter Blain. On 34 minutes the visitors regained the lead as Lewis cut in from the right wing and struck a low right foot shot that comfortably beat the keeper at the far corner.

But once again the homesters equalised as Chris Lloyd punished a poor Bluebirds clearance at a corner.
Just before the break and the homesters were reduced to ten men as Jamie Hobson received a straight red card for raising his hands.

Dominating proceedings

The second half totally belonged to the Bluebirds who dominated proceedings after constantly having the homesters on the back foot - and the winner was scored on 56 minutes as Lewis again cut-in from the left to score a peach of a goal, which was a carbon copy of his first goal.

It made the long journey for the Haverfordwest County team and their hardy band of supporters worthwhile as they wait to see who their opponents in the next round will be!

Bluebirds claim deserved double

Haverfordwest County 4 - Caerleon 0

Chris O'Sullivan scores from the spot.Haverfordwest County completed a deserved double against Caerleon as they grabbed three goals in eight first-half minutes and added a fourth during the second period to go with a 3-0 victory at Caerleon in September.

It was fitting reward for a solid all-round display that will have pleased managers Micky Ellis and Wayne Jones because as well as looking capable of adding to that tally they also kept a clean score-sheet as an added bonus.

Only match and early chances at both ends

It was the only Welsh League Division One match to take place and Rob Summons and Lenny Lewis, the groundsmen at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium deserve very praise for their work in ensuring that the pitch was in excellent shape, despite the dismal weather.

Match officials: Tom Bevan, conrad Holmes & Helmut Reinhardt Caerleon belied their lowly league position in a bright start involving Luke Palmers and James Francis, whilst Josh Brown volleyed over the bar when well placed. The Bluebirds also had chances as Ritchie Lewis fired a rare right-foot drive well wide and put a left-foot volley over the bar.

Productive period

But Haverfordwest opened their account after 22 minutes when Chris O'Sullivan did well to pick up a loose ball just outside the Caerleon box and put in a cracking low drive which beat Josh Rowlands at his far post.

It was the start of a productive eight minutes for the Bluebirds because Jack Christopher headed home a corner at the far post and when Ricky Watts was cut down in the box up stepped O'Sullivan to send Rowlands the wrong way from the resultant spot-kick.

Bluebirds stay on top

The Bluebirds had other chances during the rest of the first period which they were unable to take in the awful conditions but they added a fourth goal within two minutes of the restart as unselfish work initiated by Ritchie Lewis and continued by Christopher and O'Sullivan allowed Steffan Williams to tap in from five yards.

Caerleon never gave up running but they were unable to beat Peter Blain, who made a very good diving save to deny Ricci Morgan towards the end. It was a similar story at the other end as Haverfordwest County had chances that fell to Lewis and Steff Williams, who rapped the cross bar with a glancing header, but with no further scoring it was the Bluebirds' players and hardy band of supporters who were able to celebrate a thoroughly deserved double success!

Welsh Cup, second round

Sully makes Cambrian & Clydach pay the penalty

Cambrian & Clydach 0 – Haverfordwest County 1

Chris O' Sullivan scored the crucial penalty that secured Haverfordwest County's passage into the Welsh Cup third round. Chris O'Sullivan's early penalty earned Haverfordwest County a slender victory at Cambrian & Clydach.

The Bluebirds fine win has earned them an away tie against Llandudno Junction, which will be played on weekend of 8th or 9th of December.

Sully is spot on

The visitors were awarded a penalty early in the tie when Steffan Williams was pulled back by the shirt inside the box. Sully stepped up and kept his nerve to fire home the crucial spot kick.

Bluebirds' goalkeeper Peter Blain had a quiet afternoon and the defense was outstanding as they kept the Rhondda outfit at bay.

Down to ten-men

The homesters went down to ten-men when they had a player sent off for rash tackle.

Jack Christopher and Williams were a constant thorns in the home side's defence and substitute Rob Morgans was unlucky not to score a second goal, the midfielder striking a vicious right foot shot that crashed against the woodwork.

Manager Mike Ellis and assistant Wayne Jones will be pleased that their team secured a good away victory and will the Bluebirds will surely be looking to go further in this competition that now includes teams from the Welsh Premier.

This Saturday, 24th November the Bluebirds return to action where Caerleon are the visitors to the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium in a re-arranged league game.

Bluebirds  drop more silly points at home

Haverfordwest County 3 – Taffs Well 3

Steffan Williams equalises with a stunning headerHaverfordwest County stay eighth in the table after picking up their third draw of the campaign, this time against Taffs Well at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

The visitors took the lead in the third minute, when stand-in Bluebirds keeper James Manson brought down Simon Prangly inside the box. This week the keeper stayed on the pitch, not like last week when Peter Blain had his marching orders, as right back Jamal Robert made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick, which rolled under Manson's outstretched body.

Christopher strikes twice

The Bluebirds, playing in an unfamiliar red kit, equalised on 13 minutes as Steffan Williams, one of the smallest players on the pitch, rose highest to powerfully nod in Chris O'Sullivan's well-directed corner.

Four minutes later, and Jack Christopher poached his first goal of the season for the Bluebirds, the striker beating the visitors' offside trap and coolly hitting a low strike beyond Rhys Wilson for a quality finish.

On 37 minutes the homesters deservedly went 3-1 ahead. Christopher powerfully nodding home O'Sullivan's corner, and really putting his side in the ascendancy and in complete control at half time.

Jack Christopher was back to his best scoring twice,Shambolic second half

The Bluebirds failed to grab the game by the scruff in the second period as the visitors got on top territorially as the Bluebirds lost their shape and direction. Taffs Well were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute, when centre back Liam Hancock tripped up Tom Wellington inside the box. Again Robert took responsibility and made no mistake from 12-yards as he blasted the ball into the roof of the net.

On 76 minutes the visitors levelled matters as Manson parried Joe Evans' low shot and Jordan Jones scored with a simple tap-in from the rebound.

There were no further goals but on the evidence of play this was certainly a game of two halves with the Bluebirds winning the first period and Taffs Well definitely shading the second.

Bluebirds chairman Rob Summons did not beat about the bush when he said afterwards, “We played well in the first half, but we were a total shambles in the second half. It's time we stopped gifting points late on!”

Cruel luck for nine-man Bluebirds beaten
in injury time by fortunate West End

Steff Williams goes on the attack.Haverfordwest County 2 –
West End 3

Haverfordwest County were cruelly denied victory when West End grabbed two injury-time goals to snatch a dramatic victory at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

Football is a cruel game on times, and as the Bluebirds, who were down to ten-men after 30 minutes, heroically clawed their way back to lead 2-1 bang on full time.

However, although the dramatic fight back looked complete but the Bluebirds pressed the 'self destruct' button and leaked two late goals and ended up with absolutely nothing.

Dale is spot on

Jack Christopher made a welcome return for Bluebirds. The visitors took the lead on 30 minutes when Bluebirds' goalkeeper Peter Blain was issued a straight red-card for taking out Ashley Curtis. Lee Bevan went between the sticks only for former Bluebird Dale Griffiths to smash the resulting spot-kick into the roof of the net.

The visitors finally equalised on 75 minutes when left-side midfielder Steffan Williams was bundled over in the box by Luke Martin, the West End keeper also receiving a straight red-card from referee Lew Edwards. Substitute Chris O'Sullivan then confidently converted from 12-yards to square matters.

A few minutes later and Bluebirds' lively substitute Ben Steele struck a 30-yard piledriver that crashed off the crossbar. But the teenager soon made amends when he finished coolly to give the Bluebirds a slender 2-1 lead with only a couple of minutes to go.

Cruel twist

Dale Griffiths scores from the spot to give West End the lead. But there came a cruel twist as some poor Bluebirds defending saw them pay the ultimate price. Ex-Bluebird Darren Griffiths squeezed home an equaliser, and matters got worse as Bluebirds substitute Andy Hill was red-carded for swearing in the aftermath of the goal.

Then right at the death, West End striker Alex Chrysanthou struck home a dramatic winner from the edge of the box to leave the Bluebirds empty handed.

Haverfordwest County have dropped 11 points already at home this season and have also had four players sent off in just nine games. On a positive note, Jack Christopher played up front after transferring back from Carmarthen Town earlier in the week, but he failed to get any decent service, despite working hard as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 formation.

Bluebirds boss Mike Ellis in deep discussion with referee Lew Edwards at half time. “I felt pig sick at the end,” confessed Bluebirds manager Mike Ellis. “We worked so hard to get ourselves back in the game. We were leading 2-1 and then failed to defend and shut up shop.

“It was a disaster, but we've got to quickly pick ourselves up for the next game, that is also at home next Saturday against Taffs Well.”

Haverfordwest County: Peter Blain; Ricky Watts; Antonio Facciuto; Lee Bevan; Liam Hancock; Phil Cattlin; Steffan Williams; Chris Holloway (Captain); Jack Christopher (80' Ben Steele); Rob Morgans (70' Chris O'Sullivan); Richie Lewis (75' Andy Hill). The home side equalised but the Bluebirds restored the lead when Chris O'Sullivan volleyed home that beat the keeper at his near post.

Five minutes before half time and Jordan Smith added a third goal, drilling a low shot into the far corner.

Caerleon 0 – Haverfordwest County 3

Impressive displays

There were impressive displays from centre back Lee Bevan and midfielder Jordan Smith, who caught the eye for the visitors.

After a goalless first period, the visitors finally broke the deadlock in the 70th minute from the penalty spot. Chris O'Sullivan saw his first effort parried by the keeper, but he quickly followed up to lash the ball home with the second bite of the cherry.

Caerleon were then reduced to ten-men when they had a player sent-off for a second yellow card offence. Steffan Williams gave the Bluebirds a two-goal cushion in the 77th minute. Jamie Evans' wicked shot was parried and Williams reacted quickest in the box to tuck the ball into the net.

Bluebirds shocked by Hutchinson's stunning set piece goal that earns Cambrian victory

Haverfordwest County 1 – Cambrian & Clydach 2

Bluebirds' Ritchie Lewis beats a defender A late Liam Hutchinson goal that stemmed from a brilliantly executed free-kick cruelly denied Haverfordwest County a draw with Cambrian & Clydach at the Conygar Bridge Meadow.

Centre back Lee Brown had taken out the visitors Kieron Lewis off the ball and referee Beckett awarded a free kick on the edge of the area. Hutchinson's well-struck set piece gave keeper Peter Blain no chance of stopping it and secured a surprise win.

Early goal

The visitors opened the scoring on 12 minutes when substitute James Mahoney, who had earlier replaced Mike Jones, drilled home from the six-yard box.

But within a minute the Bluebirds equalised as Ritchie Lewis cut in off the wing and drilled a left-foot shot past Jarrod Howells.

Skipper red carded

After 23 minutes Haverfordwest County suffered a huge blow when skipper Chris Holloway was issued a straight red-card for studs- up in a horrendous tackle.

Ricky Watts strong on the ball for CountyThis red card upset the Bluebirds' rhythm as the score read 1-1 at half-time.

After the break the Haverfordwest County created the better scoring chances as a Lee Bevan header and two shots from Steffan Williams should have given the homesters some breathing space.

But right at the end Hutchinson's stunning free-kick stole the points for a delighted Cambrian & Clydach outfit.

Goytre gain cup win to ruffle Bluebirds' feathers at the Conygar Bridge Meadow

Haverfordwest County 2 – Goytre 3
(After extra-time)

Haverfordwest County left back Andrew Fuccuito takes on Goytre's Richard Jerimiah.Haverfordwest County bowed out of the Welsh League Cup at the first hurdle with a disjointed performance at home to a confident Goytre team currently sitting atop of Division Two.

The Bluebirds were eager to play the ball around and a lovely ball into the danger zone from the left flank by Ritchie Lewis found Steffan Williams in space but the striker's right foot shot flew well over the bar.

At the other end, Goytre showed why they have won all six matches in Division Two as the Gwent-based side had a low free kick by Carl Bassett fly just wide and James Young fired over the bar.

Bluebirds took lead

The Bluebirds took the lead after 24 minutes when Lewis fired in a superb volley that Goytre keeper Scott James did well to block but Steffan Williams followed up to touch the ball into the net.

But Goytre fought back with the softest of goals after 36 minutes when Bluebirds' keeper James Manson was caught in a rush outside his box and allowed Carl Bassett to touch home.

Haverfordwest County's Ritchie Lewis battles hard for posessession.Goytre skipper Matthew Prosser posed a threat on the left but a timely intervention by Lee Bevan cleared the danger as the home side were forced onto the back foot and the score read 1-1 at half time just about reflected the patterns of play.

The Bluebirds brought on Owen Thomas for Luke Fayers at half time and late on Greg Walters got the nod to substitute Martin Carroll, who had played well – but in the third quarter neither side was able to take command. The Bluebirds had the best chance in this period as a Ritchie Lewis left-foot kick was deflected on to the bar with keeper Scott James grasping thin air – but Bevan thundered the rebound high and wide.

Manson made a terrific save at the other end from Luke Prosser and as both teams sought the winner another screamer from Lewis flashed wide after good work by Watts and new recruit Jordan Smith.

Quick on the break

But Goytre were quick on the break and Luke Prosser put Richard Jerimiah through but Manson came out best in a one-on-one as the visitors screamed for a penalty. He was left stranded soon afterwards, though, as Matthew Prosser toe-poked home a corner to give his side the lead with five minutes remaining.

A Lewis cross saw sub Jamie Evans miss time an overhead kick as the Bluebirds sought to pull level but he found the target with a vicious volley that flew into the far corner with just seconds left.

Soft goal

Jamie Evans had a shot blocked and Walters also went close and headed over late on – before a late soft goal from Jerimiah gave the visitors entry into the next round!

Bluebirds settle for a draw with
Bridgend Town at the Brewery Field

Bridgend Town 2 – Haverfordwest County 2

Steffan Williams scored to put Haverfordwest County 2-1 up at Bridgend Town. Bridgend Town substitute Paul Thomas equalised ten minutes from full time to earn a 2-2 draw with Haverfordwest County at the Brewery Field.

This was a 'Jekyll & Hyde' performance from the visitors. “We were brilliant in midweek, but today, we were not at our best. Leading 2-1 we should have shut up shop,” said County boss Ellis.

Billing opened scoring

After a goalless first period the homesters took the lead shortly after the interval when former Bluebird Tom Billing made no mistake at the far post.

However, the lead was short-lived when the visitors equalised through debutant substitute striker Andy Hill. The former Goytre frontman pounced when Ritchie Lewis' left foot drive crashed off the cross bar and Hill made no mistake with the rebound.

Williams scores again

On 75 minutes and the visitors took a 2-1 lead when Steffan Williams made no mistake from a teasing Chris O'Sullivan cross from the right.

But Bridgend equalised when Lewis got caught in possession and a flowing counter-attack left the Bluebirds short in numbers at the back as Blain was left stranded as Thomas fired a low drive in the back of the net.

Nex Saturday, the Bluebirds entertain Goytre in a cup match at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium, kick off is at 2pm.

Lewis bags smashing brace for Bluebirds in their brilliant cup victory on the road

Cambrian & Clydach 0 – Haverfordwest County 4

Ritchie Lewis scored twice in the Haverfordwest County's victory over Cambrian & ClydachHaverfordwest County scored four goals without reply in a tremendous away cup success over Cambrian & Clydach on Tuesday night.

Bluebirds grabbed two goals in each half to run out comfortable winners and their reward is a guaranteed home tie against a Welsh Premier outfit in the next round.

The goals were scored by Ritchie Lewis with a brace alongside Owain Thomas and Craig Frater, who also hit the back of the net to secure a surprisingly easy passage. This brilliant result was endorsed by the Bluebirds' management duo of Mickey Ellis and Wayne Jones, who were delighted with their team's confident all-round display and happy they kept a clean sheet in the process.

Cracking goal

Owain Thomas opened the scoring in the 15th minute with the best goal of the tie, the central midfielder unleashing an unstoppable right foot shot from 25 yards that flew in the back of the net.

Ten minutes before half time and Lewis added a second goal. A long Peter Blain punt downfield fell to Rob Morgans' whose cross was met by Lewis who cleverly drilled home at the near post.

Five minutes before the break and Chris O'Sullivan replaced Chris Holloway who picked up a neck injury, but the skipper should be fit to face Bridgend Town in an away league fixture this Saturday.

Debutant Walters

Shortly after half time and teenager Greg Walters came on to earn his debut, replacing Morgans' on the hour mark.

The visitors killed of the tie when they added a crucial third goal with an opportunist finish. Another long ball down the field by keeper Blain had the homesters defence in all sorts of bother as Frater ghosted in the box to score.

Near the end of the tie Lewis completed the scoring as he cleverly chipped the keeper.

Haverfordwest County: Peter Blain; Antonio Fucciuto; Lee Bevan; Phil Cattlin; Ricky Watts; Steffan Williams (Martin Carroll 70'); Rob Morgans Greg Walters 60'); Owain Thomas; Ritchie Lewis; Chris Holloway (Chris O'Sullivan 40'); Craig Frater. Substitutes.

Steffan scores late winner for happy Bluebirds against unlucky Barry Town

Haverfordwest County 3 – Barry Town 2

Lee BavanSteffan Williams grabbed the winner ten minutes from the end to secure three vital points for Haverfordwest County over Barry Town at the Conygar Bridge Meadow.

Goals from Lee Bevan, Chris Holloway and Williams earned the Bluebirds a hard-fought victory over the dangerous visitors.

Bluebirds managers Mickey Ellis and Wayne Jones' team played poorly in the first half but after a making few changes at the interval the Bluebirds were definitely more ominous on the break in the second period.

Costly error

The visitors opened the scoring in the 28th minute when a costly defensive error let in Barry's striker Anthony Nagi, who drilled home a low shot past goalkeeper Peter Blain at full stretch.

Two minutes before the interval and the Bluebirds equalised. Centre back Lee Bevan's wicked 25-yard direct free kick took a slight deflection as the ball flew in the far corner.

After the break Ellis moved Ricky Watts from defence into the heart of midfield, replacing Scott Evans, and Martin Carroll replaced striker Jamie Evans, who suffered a knock.
On 58 minutes the Bluebirds took the lead when Chris O'Sullivan's free kick in the box fell kindly to Chris Holloway, and the skipper drilled home from eight yards.

Late winner

However, within ten minutes the visitors equalised when former Bluebird Mike Hartley buried a low drive into the back of the net at the far post.
Late in the game that looked to be heading for a draw a brilliant solo run and finish by Williams earned his side a welcome victory.

Monmouth Town secure points despite a late spirited comeback from Bluebirds

Haverfordwest County 3 – Monmouth Town 4

Monmouth Town puch forward.Haverfordwest County produced a late comeback to almost snatch a draw against Monmouth Town as they fought back from 1-4 with late goals by Ricky Watts and Rob Morgans.

But Ritchie Lewis fired wide with a good chance and so last season's Division Two champions travelled home a little fortunate with all three points.

The Bluebirds suffered an early set-back when veteran full back Deryn Brace went off injured after only two minutes to be replaced by Phil Cattlin.

They had an early chance when Steffan Williams dribbled through but lost possession at the last moment. New comers Scott Evans and Luke Fayres need time to settle in and the visitors looked sharp up front as Dan McDonald fired over the bar and then looked to have scored a cracking goal, only to be recalled for offside on 29 minutes.

But the Bluebirds conceded their first goal of their league campaign three minutes later when Gareth Elliott was shown a red card for an alleged flailing arm in an aerial challenge. Referee Teifion Cook pointed to the spot and also booked Chris O'Sullivan for debating the issue too long before McDonald sent Peter Blain the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Haverfordwest began the second half well as Lewis fired narrowly wide and Williams posed a threat – but a late lunge by Lee Bevan saw a penalty which again McDonald netted with ease.

Bad to worse

Ricky Watts stays strong in possession.Things went from bad to worse as the visitors benefited from slack defending to allow Tom Maxted to score from close range, with Bevan yellow-carded for a late barge on the goal scorer.

The Bluebirds finally broke their scoring duck when Williams was hauled down in the box and keeper Keiron Blackburn, who somehow escaped without even a yellow card before O'Sullivan scored from the resulting penalty.

But as the home side pressed forward they allowed Tom Burns to score a fourth goal for Monmouth Town before Watts and Morgans scored late goals for the Bluebirds which were still too little, too late.

Haverfordwest County entertain Barry Town next Saturday, 1st September, with a 2.30pm kick off at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

Haverfordwest County: Peter Blain; Ricky Watts; Deryn Brace; (2' Phil Cattlin); Lee Bevan; Gareth Elliott; Scott Evans; Chris O'Sullivan; (77' Rob Morgans); Chris Holloway (Captain); Steffan Williams; Luke Fayres; (70' Jamie Evans); Ritchie Lewis.

Nicky Woodrow uses his chest to control the ball for Haverfordwest CountyDrab goalless draw at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium

Haverfordwest County 0 – Ton Pentre 0

Neither side could carve a goal-scoring opportunity as this clash finished goalless between Haverfordwest County and Ton Pentre at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

Both teams came into this clash unbeaten and boasting 100% winning records, but come the final whistle they had to settle for a draw.

Following this result, Ton Pentre sit top of the table on goal difference over Haverfordwest County, who are second, and the Bluebirds have the same number of points as the Bull Dogs after three matches played.

In the first period, both teams created scoring chances but were guilty of not taking them. The visitors missed an early sitter as the Bull Dogs' strikers Ross Fowler and Gareth Teostone combined inside the box and the latter screwed his right foot shot wide from ten yards out.

Lee Beven and Ton Pentre keeper John Howe compete for ball inside the box.Feathers ruffled

The Bluebirds struggled to keep possession as the Bull Dogs players were constantly nipping at the ankles and doing their best to ruffle the Bluebirds' feathers.

Midway through the first period and Jamie Evans flashed a right foot shot wide, Nicky Woodrow glanced a header wide from a well-delivered O'Sullivan free-kick in the six-yard box. The wide-sided midfielder who usually plays up front should have really hit the target.

Should have done better

Visiting goalkeeper John Howe fumbled a cross by Ricky Watts and Evans' goal bound shot was blocked when the striker knew he should have done better.

Eleven minutes after the break and Haverfordwest County manager Micky Ellis felt it was time for change and brought on Rob Morgans instead of Chris O'Sullivan in midfield. Moments later and Williams blazed a right foot shot from the edge of the box over the crossbar.

Steffan Williams looks to take players on.The visitors also pressed hard and Leon Young directed a header from a corner straight at Bluebirds' keeper Peter Blain. A draw was a fair result as the Bluebirds missed the passing skills of the injured Ritchie Lewis and Antonio Faccuito.

Haverfordwest County entertain Monmouth Town at home next Saturday, 25th August, kick off is at 2.30pm.

Haverfordwest County: Peter Blain; Ricky Watts; Deryn Brace (62' Phil Cattlin); Lee Bevan; Gareth Elliott; Owain Thomas; Chris O'Sullivan (56' Rob Morgans); Chris Holloway; Nicky Woodrow; Jamie Evans (72' Craig Frater); Steffan Williams.

Steffan Williams attacks for the Bluebirds.Lewis and Holloway bag goals for Bluebirds to sink Pontardawe

Haverfordwest County 2 –
Pontardawe Town 0

Haverfordwest County scored two goals in the second-half to secure a deserved victory over Pontardawe Town and earn their second league victory in three days.

After a goalless first period the Bluebirds scored a controversial penalty through Ritchie Lewis to break the deadlock a minute after the break. Chris Holloway added a second goal midway through the second period when he capitalised on an error by Town goalkeeper James Harries.

The visitors should have opened the scoring on 15 minutes. A corner in the box fell to the totally unmarked centre back Elliot Thomas who powered a header over the Bluebirds' crossbar from ten-yards.

Gareth Elliott places a heder goalwards.A few minutes later and Jamie Evans' volley was deflected for a corner as the Bluebirds piled on the pressure. Chris O'Sullivan delivered an accurate corner that was met by midfielder Chris Holloway's header inside the box that flew past goalkeeper James Harries' right-hand post.

Centre back Gareth Elliott unleashed a fierce right-foot shot from outside the box that was blocked by Andrew Stokes. The Bluebirds kept pressing but could not break through some resolute defending, as it remained goalless at half time.

Controversial penalty

A minute after the break and the Bluebirds were awarded a controversial penalty when visiting keeper Harries took down O'Sullivan inside the box.

Ritchie Lewis stepped up and struck a poor penalty that deflected off the keeper and crept into the net for the opener.
That goal gave the homesters a lift when a minute later Lewis' curling shot outside the 18-yard area deflected off a defender for a corner.

Jamie Evans' low hard right foot drive from 18 yards saw the keeper Harries dive to his right and palm the ball to safety. Harries pulled off a brilliant diving stop to his left to once again deny Lewis.

Lee Bevan controls matters in the air.Doubled the lead

A looping header by Town's Chris Allen took keeper Peter Blain by surprise as it hit the post. The Bluebirds made a double substitution on 65 minutes, Rob Morgans replaced O'Sullivan in midfield and Nicky Woodrow came on for Evans – and Morgans with his first touch struck a low shot at the keeper.

On 68 minutes the Bluebirds doubled their lead. Morgans' corner into the box was fumbled by keeper Harries and Holloway gratefully touched the ball in the net for his first league goal for the club before Harries pulled off a blinding save to prevent Woodrow adding a third goal.

Blain pulled off a stunning save to ensure he kept a clean sheet for the second game to keep the Bluebirds with a 100% record.

Steffan Williams scored twice in Bluebirds' win.Superb Williams brace sets Bluebirds up for great win in Goytre

Goytre United 0 – Haverfordwest County 4

Steffan Williams scored two terrific goals to secure a superb victory for Haverfordwest County at Goytre United on the opening day of the season.

The Bluebirds could not have started the season better; winning convincingly against Goytre, whose manager is former Bluebird Derek Brazil and who was full of praise for the visitors' display.

Williams scored either side of half time as substitutes Nicky Woodrow and Rob Morgans also added their names to the score sheet as the Bluebirds kept a clean sheet.

The visitors opened the scoring on 36 minutes. Ricky Watts, playing at right back had an outstanding game, and it was his cross in the box that was nodded down by Jamie Evans, setting up Steffan Williams with an easy tap-in.

Superb low drive

Nine minutes after half time and the Bluebirds doubled the lead. Williams, who was terrorising the Goytre defence, broke down the right flank, cut inside and drilled a superb low drive in the far corner.

Twelve minutes from full time and substitute Nicky Woodrow scored a cracking third goal. The striker controlled the ball on the edge of the box as he turned and smashed a sweet left foot strike into the top corner.

The visitors added a fourth goal three minutes from the end; substitute Rob Morgans unleashed a 20-yard thunderbolt that crashed in the top corner so his side had the perfect start to the season.

Won't get carried away

Assistant manager Wayne Jones said, “The team played superbly but we must not get carried away and must take one game at a time.

“Ricky Watts, Chris Holloway and Steffan Williams were outstanding, but we won't get carried away with this victory because there is a long way to go and this is a very tough division.”
