The People Who Count - Part 4 - September 2025

PembrokeshireSport.co.uk  is very proud of our unrivalled coverage of local cricket but readily admit that a huge factor in such blanket coverage relies on fantastic support from wonderful scorers in a range of clubs who supply us with scores and other match details - and that is why we gratefully dub them:
THE PEOPLE WHO COUNT!

Interestingly, the majority of them started because their husbands and/or children were involved - and they have now extended their expertise to such a level that they also spread the score lines nationwide on the ‘Play-Live Cricket’ app, whilst the fellers involved tend to rely more on their scorebooks - but still take pride in making them look like works of art!

Over the next couple of weeks, we hope to mention as many as possible, so if your club has a scorer who does a great job outside the top two divisions then do let us know – and to all of them, old and young, we say a huge thank you for your unswerving support – AND SINCERELY HOPE WE SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT SEASON!

Gwyneth Johns - Narberth10. Gwyneth Johns

Gwyneth has long been a hard worker for Narberth Cricket Club, where she is currently vice-chairperson and a life member in recognition of all her work in their fund-raising, especially their very popular tote which has earned large sums of money for the club that could be used for improving their facilities.

She took over the scoring duties when stalwart member Idwal Vincent stepped down and after taking a rest for a couple of years when a new scorer was found is back with the firsts after still maintaining her involvement with the seconds during that time - and is looking forward to scoring when the club appears in the Harrison-Allen Bowl at the start of the next season.

Gwyneth’s family have been heavily involved for over half a century because her husband Mike, sons Matthew and Davy, and now grandson Oliver, have all been very good players for the club.

Phoenix Phillips - Cresselly11. Phoenix Phillips (Cresselly)

Phoenix has taken over the reins at Cresselly and is the youngest scorer in the top two divisions at 14 years of age, as well as being a good cricket player in her own right who has played representative cricket for Wales and the region as a very useful bowler who can also score her share of runs.

She fits in really well with the Cresselly players and travel is no problem because her father Christian has settled in really well as an all-rounder after a number of years as a highly respected all-rounder at Kilgetty - and her mum Joy also attends almost all the games to support her smashing daughter and her ‘old man’!

Chris Holder - Hook12. Chris Holder (Hook)

Chris has served Hook well as a player for many years and could still make a useful contribution for the second team - but decided that he could serve the club better as a scorer and in the process clear a playing space for another one of the talented young players on the club’s conveyor belt.

He has quickly adapted to the role and is rightly proud of the fact that his scorebook looks a picture and he is superb in his role as unofficial press officer because he never misses a message with first-innings details at tea and straight after the end of the game. Thanks Chris!

He was also a competitive player for such a gentle person and I must finally take the chance to apologise for giving him a nickname that implied he was very fiery in his bowling spells to me!
