Thank you to our local rugby contacts - No 5 - by Bill Carne

Gordon Thomas and I are very proud of the way that we provide unrivalled coverage of local rugby, both with scores and scorers, plus articles, and once again we would like to pay tribute to those members of the clubs, other than one club which sadly doesn’t co-operate,  who help us to provide that coverage by phoning us early on a Saturday evening, not only with their own scorers but their opponents too!

Not content with that effort however, a number of them also relay their teams for me after selection or send me a copy of their web-site details so that every player has a mention of some sort on our site!

This particular trio are all brilliant in their different roles, with James as an outstanding asset to Llangwm, Parry helping us from up North in Aberaeron whenever we need him, and Kenny – well, what do you say about this great character, other than WHAT YOU SEE IS DEFINITELY WHAT YOU GET!

All three are just as important to us as all the rest – and we praise them as we did the others, with huge gratitude from PembrokeshireSport.co.uk!.

13. James Lewis (Llangwm RFC):

James Lewis - a great asset to Llangwm sportIf there was an award for loyalty and willingness to help with any task then Jamie Lewis would be a candidate, not only for his work with Llangwm RFC but also with the village’s cricket team.

On the oval-ball game front, James has played for Llangwm, where he was born and bred, since he started as a nipper and now, 35 years later he has only just finished because of a series of injuries last season, although he still managed a cameo when the team went on tor this season.

He was club captain for three seasons and has just finished a fourth campaign as team manager and rarely missing a training session or match.

He took over from as unofficial press officer from a real character  in the late Brian ‘Jamer’ James  for The Wasps (and does the same in cricket!) - and even when Llangwm has lost some games heavily he still makes himself available after matches, trying hard to find opponents’ scores in away games.

He chats to me about the Llangwm team every Friday and has even taken the trouble to take a couple of post-match pics to highlight his details when I’ve asked for them.

He is a real gentleman of sport and Llangwm  are indeed lucky to have this modest and likeable sportsman doing such a great job!

14. Parry Evans (Aberaeron RFC):

Parry Evans - always ready to help when neededAberaeron have Parry Evans as unofficial press officer and is lucky to have former player Arwyn Sychpant providing a detailed match report of every game, in Welsh and English, which I usually receive on a Sunday morning.

Parry took over from another wonderful Aber character in long-serving Hon Sec,  Glyndwr Evans, and both of them have been totally understanding of my plight that I already cover matches from 12 teams from as far apart as Cardigan and Whitland so one more could easily be the straw that breaks this knackered old camel’s back.

So, whenever Aber take on a Pembrokeshire club, home or away, I can phone Parry for some scores and scorers safe in the knowledge that he doesn’t mind because it means more publicity for his club - albeit knowing that a little leg pulling might well be the order of the day.

It is great that Aberaeron have gained promotion to Division Two (West) next season because they are such a forward-thinking club, with fantastic facilities and one of the most panoramic views one could find of Cardigan Bay just a long stone’s throw away!

15. Kenny Davies (Junior and Youth Organiser):

Kenny Davies - a great character and a terrific worker for junior and youth rugbyKenny Davies falls into a slightly different category because he is not attached to any particular club but is the long-serving lead of the Game Management Group (GMG) for District H, with responsibility for rugby from under 7s through to youth rugby – and who unfailingly co-ordinates all the youth scores and scorers each week and texts me them- a job I’m sure that he finds a little difficult because, like me, he is not an avid fan of using the text function on our phones with our misshapen, arthritic fingers caused by sports participation!

But every week they arrive and even if I fall behind a little, he is very understanding and patient (it must be since he started out with his bees and they seem to have had a calming influence on him!)

Not content with that little lot, Kenny also leads the organisation of the Junior Finals’ Day, and again he gives us amateur scribes and photographers every help in providing small matters like parking, programmes and other small matters that help us provide unrivalled coverage of the fantastic all-day event.

Kenny is also now as fit as ever he was in his own rugby-playing days because of his work in local leisure centres like Crymych and Haverfordwest, where he leads a range of activities that include general fitness, ‘spinning’ classes (on the special bikes) and even a little swimming, all done with the enthusiasm and encouragement that have participants enjoying the sessions whilst getting fitter.

Kenny Davies is a pleasure to work with and we love his open frankness in our dealings – and long may he continue in his vital role!
