Thank you to our local rugby contacts - No 4 - by Bill Carne

Gordon Thomas and I are very proud of the way that we provide unrivalled coverage of local rugby, both with scores and scorers, plus articles, and once again we would like to pay tribute to those members of the clubs, other than one club which sadly doesn’t co-operate,  who help us to provide that coverage by phoning us early on a Saturday evening, not only with their own scorers but their opponents too!

Not content with that effort however, a number of them also relay their teams for me after selection or send me a copy of their web-site details so that every player has a mention of some sort on our site!

This particular trio are their club’s star contributors and they appear down the batting order only by dint of the fact that their clubs are all in division Four (West) A – so thanks lads, I really do appreciate your dedication to PembrokeshireSport.co.uk!

10. Jack Dudley (St Davids)

Jack DudleyJack Dudley took over the role of unofficial press officer with St Davids after the sad passing away of ‘Mr St Davids’ John James, whose loss to The Saints was immeasurable.

Jack was heavily involved in coaching at the time and was also still playing when needed but he not only took on the job but has been brilliant ever since.

He is always one of the first three to send me the team sheet and lets me know if there is anything I need to know - and soon after the finish of matches, home and away, I receive a text on which are the times of any scores, the scorers and a few details before a chat later on, before he leads the singing, where I get a great appraisal of what went on, with a very honest opinion of how they had played.

He then takes on any photographs I ask him to send me and knows so much about most opponents I can’t go wrong.

And all this whilst Big Jack helps influential manager Bruce Evans with the team and I really appreciate all his marvellous help so I would like to place on record my huge thanks for doing such a great job!

11. Simon Edwards (Pembroke):

Simon EdwardsI would like to claim Simon Edwards as my greatest convert to being an unofficial press officier as well as being an outstanding team manager after many years at Crickmarren as a player, seven of them as captain - but I know from our days playing cricket together that our Simon will only do it if he sees a value to the effort!

I coaxed him into the role and at first he would only do the minimum, which included me phoning him for the Scarlets’ team, but over the intervening time he has blossomed into a terrific contact, where he also provides the opposition scorers and a superb analysis of the way each try was scored.

He also provides extra coverage by pointing out birthdays, youngsters making their debuts or groups of players who have done well, backed up by relevant photographs, but just when he is a top unofficial press officer he has decided to step down from being team manager - and it looks as if I will have to train up another Scarlet now!

But I am still hoping I can persuade him to phone me on Saturday evenings but in the meanwhile I can only say a huge ‘thank you’ to my Stackpole Cricket Club side-kick who used to supply me with Woodpecker cider on Saturday evenings and send me home the worse for wear!

12. Mike Ridley (Pembroke Dock Harlequins RFC)

Mike Ridley Mike Ridley first visited Bierspool with his grandfather Wiffy when he was a nipper and at 18 joined the club as an adult member and now, over 50 years later, he is doing an immense amount of work - and that includes being their unofficial press officer for The Quins.

Mike is also hon Treasurer of the club and is happy to be considered as a ‘dogsbody’ (his words) because since he is retired he has more time to devote to all the little jobs that no-one else wants, like taking the dirty kit every weekend to his local laundry and then setting it out in the changing room on match days, is not averse to cleaning the showers and organises the programme for home games.

He lets me have news of the team selected as soon as it is published (usually as early as Thursday afternoon) and at half time I am provided with all the scorers - and then another call immediately after the game is over with everything I need to know, home and away.

It is also worth noting that Mike is something of a fanatical follower of the Welsh team for as long as he can remember, with a programme of each (which adds up to over 450 so far!) and includes autumn internationals, Six Nations championships, home and away, plus a few from even further afield.

But it is Pembroke Dock Harlequins which takes up most of his spare time and I am so glad that PembrokeshireSport.co.uk benefits from his help because he is a real contributor and it wouldn’t be the same without him now!
