A superb innings of 97 not out by Narberth’s ace run gatherer Marc Hughes helped Pembroke Counter Cricket Club gain an outstanding victory over a strong South Wales Cricket Association at Imble Lane, Pembroke Dock.
Hughes’ chanceless knock held the county club’s innings together as they successfully chased a huge target of 291 runs to win from their 45 overs on a cracking wicket and only missed out on a deserved century by three runs as they won in dramatic fashion off the very last ball of a match that was well umpired by Allan Hansen and John Willliams, respective chairman and president of the PACUS.
The county team needed five runs with three balls to win and Dan Jame

s (Whitland) looked to have achieved that in one hit but was caught one-handed, a superb catch by Rhys Owen on the boundary, leaving last man Sean Hannon with the task of seeing them home.
And that is what the Neyland wicket-keeper did quite nervelessly as he pulled his first ball to the mid-wicket boundary and when the fielders came in tight to prevent a single he lofted the final delivery to the on-side boundary to secure success by just one wicket.
South Wales CA showed their batting strength, despite losing key opener Rohan Herbert for just ten runs as he edged a ball from Rhys Davies (Carew) and Hannon managed to parry the ball to Simon Holliday (Haverfordwest) at first slip.
But Owen Binding (16 fours in his77) and Steffan Davies (69, including 13 fours) took charge for the SWCA in a brisk stand of 131 in only 20 overs before Nathan Banner claimed three wickets for the County. Holliday and Gareth Davies (Llanrhian) picked up a wicket apiece but more quick runs from Rhys Owen (42), James Garland (a speedy 53, including five fours and four sixes) and Steffan Jones (with three sixes in his 27 not out) took SWCA to a massive 290 for 6 in only 45 overs.
But Pembroke County Cricket Club made a solid start via skipper Gregg Miller (23), who really led by example all day, and Holliday (28), before both fell to the pacy Will Collinson – and Ben Field departed cheaply before Danny Potter (Haverfordwest) joined Hughes in a stand of 67 until Potter departed for 39 (nine boundaries).
Gareth Davies got himself run out but Hughes, who was immaculate in his play, found another willing ally in Rhys Davies, who hit three fours and a six in his 32. Henry Durrant (25) also played his part as Hughes kept control at the other end with his solid defence and terrific stroke play which earned him eight boundaries.
Even then fortunes ebbed and flowed until Hannon settled matters so well at the end – and the reward for Pembroke County Cricket Club was an excellent victory based on solid team work and a real will to win!
