Scott has been a Scarlets’ skipper supreme!

 
Scott Powell had a memorable season as captain of Pembroke Rugby Club for the 2017/18 season as he led The Scarlets to promotion after they romped away with the Division Three (West) A title, came runners up in the Pembrokeshire Knock Out Cup to an Aberystwyth side playing two divisions higher - and were cruelly denied being the first Pembrokeshire Club to win one of the WRU's three national competitions.
 

Great day but a last-gasp disappointment

 
They played Porthcawl at the Principality Stadium in the WRU National Bowl Final and fought back from an early deficit that would have shattered some teams to lead by two points in the final seconds, only for Porthcawl to be awarded a last-ditch penalty that saw them home by a single point.
 
It was a shattering moment for the entire squad, coaches, officials and supporters but Scott showed real dignity in defeat as he refused to criticise the final decision of the match that was regarded as dubious by some pundits - preferring instead to talk about what the season had meant to the club.
 

Always ready to praise others

 
When he spoke to the television pundits immediately after the game he dealt with them like a seasoned veteran and was later quick to thank all the supporters who followed them when they returned to their Crickmarren headquarters during the evening.
 
Talk to Scott for just a short while and he is quick to praise coach Geraint Lewis and chairman Darrell Willington.
"Geraint has been brilliant all season in training, and before and after matches, with his innovative ideas and determination to have us fit and able to play quality rugby - whilst Darrell was superb in dealing with the WRU in our appeal against Cardiff University after our semi-final defeat was overturned. The whole squad has been tremendous and I have been so lucky just to be part of it.”
 

Rugby-playing family

 
That Scott should be a good player comes as no surprise because he hails from a family where  the oval ball game is part and parcel of their way of life since dad Rowland played as a very good back row man with Cardigan and in a very good team at Pembroke Dock Harlequins which won the league title, whilst his brothers  Joe and Tom are back row men respectively at Llandovery and Narberth - and all supported by Rowland and their mum Helen.
 
"As current players we are all still a bit competitive, as we were in the back garden when we were kids - and both Joe and Tom are playing at a higher level; but none of them played at the Principality Stadium and led their team onto the hallowed turf," Scott told me with a chuckle, after the season had ended and he had a chance to appraise the season.
 
But now it is over Scott can certainly look back on a campaign to remember and take great satisfaction from his part in it – and as re-elected captain of the Scarlets for this season started off with two wins in Division Two (West).
