Jemima Rowing Club receives award
A North Pembrokeshire rowing club has been congratulated for its commitment to being an ‘all-inclusive club that caters for a range of abilities and aspirations’.
In recognition of their dedication, Fishguard and Goodwick Jemima Rowing Club has received a Disability Sport Wales insport Ribbon award.
Award presented by Angela
The award was presented by Angela Miles, Disability Sport Officer for Pembrokeshire County Council, who praised them for providing rowing experiences for everyone.
“Among their initiatives is the introduction of indoor rowing to the Thunderbolts Multi Spots group that meet at Fishguard Leisure Centre every Friday, which resulted in some members participating in an indoor rowing competition in Cardigan,” she said.
21 years since club’s inception
Jemima Rowing Club was established 21 years ago after the amalgamation of Fishguard Rowing Club and Goodwick Rowing Club. They currently have 65 members including ten under-18s and 30 ladies.
Some members choose to row socially and see it as a way to exercise with like-minded friends while enjoying the fresh air and amazing scenery that the Pembrokeshire coast offers. Other crews row competitively in the Welsh Sea Rowing Association (WSRA) league races and also national and international competitions.
Great facilities available
The club train two to three times a week and are planning to have athletes compete in the World Indoor Championships next year. Although the club started out just rowing Celtic long boats they now also have two boats they use for sculling. So members can row either sweep oar or scull.
The club also have two rowing machines located in the Yacht Club and use the Fishguard Leisure Centre to run their own indoor rowing sessions.
