Reg Jones Memorial Trophy:

Pembroke 25 - Pembrokeshire Junior Union 42

Reg Jones’ memory was again perpetuated in style as the late character from St Davids, who had so much involvement with local referees and the Junior Union, was remembered in the annual match between a county junior union side and the team recognised most by match officials for their welcome.

The Reg Jones Memorial Shield is awarded to the club that provides the best welcome to all referees in junior union matches throughout the season, and after a ballot of members of the Referee’s Association it was Pembroke who came out on top in the poll and the shield was presented after this match by Tony Pratt (Chairman of the Referees) to Darren Gilbert, the Pembroke captain, with players from six different clubs forming the opposition to the Scarlets on a special night.

Running rugby on a cold night!

Running rugby was very much the order of the cold but sunny evening in front of an enthusiastic crowd and as a result there was a total of 13 tries scored in a match where referee Chris Oliver showed the right sort of attitude to keeping a real flow to the game, with the county side grabbing eight tries and the Scarlets responding with five of their own.

The Scarlets’ tries came from skipper Gilbert at scrum half, second row Callum Lewis, full back Barry Alderman John, flanker Cyle Wetherall and No 10 Gianluca Trimarco, with all of them unconverted as prop Johnny Palmer was off target with some of them.

For the Junior Union team there was a hat-trick of tries for centre Jake Philpin, with others by half backs Adam Davies and Shane Morgan, winger Nathan Evans, full back Matthew Evans and  flanker Luke Freebury.

Thanks to all from chairman Darrell

Afterwards, the Pembroke chairman, Darrell Willington, thanked the match and ball sponsors (George John & Anthony Davies) and all other sponsors, the Ladies Committee for the food, Mr Chris Oliver for refereeing, David Palmer for videoing the game, Scott Powell for making an excellent job of match commentator and above all the County and Pembroke players for making the night a great success.
