Saints Ladies set out with an excellent debut win
St Davids Ladies 25 - Newport HSOB Ladies 20
History was made at St Davids RFC last Sunday as the club’s ladies senior side earned a narrow fixture in their first-ever fixture.
After forming earlier this year and building a squad up through training, the side took on Newport HSOB Ladies and defied some adverse weather to edge things by five tries to four, with a large crowd reflecting the significance of the occasion.
Despite the nigh on gale force winds making things difficult for both sides early on, it was home scrum half Rosie Rees who became the team’s first ever try scorer as she broke down the blind side to touch down in the corner. The same player then crossed again as the Lady Saints went 10-0 up.
But the visitors fought back to make it 10-10 at the break via tries from full back Georgia McKenzie-Liddington and prop Alexia Patrick-Evans, and the No 15 then scored again early in the second half.
But the pendulum swung again when centre Emma Withers scored a brace of tries of her own to put the Lady Saints 20-15 ahead, only for Patrick-Evans to level matters again with her second try.
With time running out though, it was Rees who got the defining score as she found space on the right wing and outstripped the cover defence to score, leaving home head coach Dale Humphrey delighted at his team’s start to competitive rugby.
“It’s been absolutely amazing,” he said.
“Some of these girls have been training now since March and it’s something we’ve stuck at. It’s not just about the win it’s about the fact we’ve got here today and actually played a game of rugby.
“I feel beyond proud for the club, the city, and of these girls.”
