On Sunday 7th June Pembrokeshire Under 10s took on their counterparts from Carmarthenshire in an excellent game of cricket at Hook CC and although they eventually lost they will have learned a great deal in defeat.
In a 35 over match in sunny conditions Carmarthenshire batted first and scored a very challenging 142 for 5. The Pembrokeshire bowlers started strongly, reducing the opposition to 5 for 2, but Ifan Knott (67 not out) batted superbly, ably supported by the middle order. Pembrokeshire stuck to their task but found it hard to limit the steady scoring, despite the efforts of Jacob Owen (2 for 8), Joe Phillips (1 for 2) and Shay Norcross (1 for 9).
Slow start for Pembs youngsters
In reply, Pembrokeshire found it hard to build any momentum against an accurate Carmarthenshire attack. Tian Sparrow took two wickets in the first over of the innings, both clean bowled, and Pembrokeshire quickly found themselves well behind the required rate at 24 for 5.
Lewis Miller (10) batted well at the top of the order to hold one end secure into the middle of the innings, which was then given some impetus by Joe Phillips (11) and Rhys Power (11) who both played some excellent attacking shots in the middle order. But Pembrokeshire continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, eventually finishing on 82 all out. Steffan Williams (2 for 4) and Dafydd Hughes (2 for 15) joined Tian Sparrow (2 for 2) as the pick of the Carmarthenshire bowlers.
Having recently secured an excellent victory over a strong West Glamorgan side this was a tough encounter for the county youngsters where they perhaps did not show their true potential. However, coaches Andrew Miller and Matthew Lewis will no doubt have the team well prepared for its next match at home to Mid Glamorgan.
