Pembrokeshire Lifting’s got power galore!

Pembrokeshire power lifting recently took five lifters to the British championships held at the sports science centre, Aldershot, and returned with an amazing tally of seven golds.
First up was Milford Haven’s reigning world champion, Jo Mansell and the 60kg Master One squatted 100kg, benched 55kg and dead-lifted 135kg to prove she is getting stronger every time she competes.
Next to compete was Haverfordwest’s Matt Richards in the 82.5kg junior class and his opening bench of 130kg was enough to secure the British Bench-press title.
Matt’s attempt on a new world record of 145kg was unsuccessful but coach Paul Murphy is confident that he will do it next time.
Coach Paul defies illness to win
Next to hit the platform was Paul Murphy himself, despite having his progress held up by a chest infection and shoulder injury. Paul did only one squat (270kg) and one bench (150kg) to save energy for the dead lift where his 270kg opener meant Paul took his 13th and14th British titles. His second lift of 300kg secured Paul the best pound for pound dead lifter in Britain for a second year.
Pembroke’s Aaron Hoskins’110kg marked the fact that his first year in lifting has been amazing, going from raw novice to one of Britain’s brightest new stars.
Aaron easily squatted 305kg, benched 192.5kg and dead lifted 275kg giving him a 772.5kg total, missing out on first place by 30kg.
Aaron’s 275kg dead lift gave him the British dead lift championship, his first of many titles to come.
Another world record
Last up came big John Stowell in the 110kg junior class and he has been making steady gains over the last year. He arrived with one thing in mind - world records! Opening on an easy 200kg, John then broke the world junior record with 217.5kg and went on to smash it again with a 230kg world record!
Paul Murphy was understandably jubilant about his protégées; achievements and told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk,
“I would just like to say how very proud I am of all the lifters. They have showed great team work in training and fully deserved their successes. But there is no time to rest as we now have the Europeans in July to work towards.”
