Pembrokeshire KO Cup - First Round

Scarlets show their attacking flair

Seamus Wiseman (Pembroke)Pembroke 59 - Llangwm 0

Pembroke showed their ball-winning capacity up front and determination to run good ball as they grabbed nine tries and kept a clean scoresheet against a Llangwm side that was unable to repeat their form of the previous week in a friendly against the Narberth Development squad.

Hooker Seamus Wiseman opened the Scarlets’ account with a well-worked try and experienced prop Jamie Brayford added two tries, as did back rower Jordan Evans. Others came from Steve Brown, Josh Griffiths, and new recruit Craig Williamson, making his debut at No 8.

Luke Alderwick also raced through for a try and added seven conversions for a personal haul of 19 points but The Wasps played far better than the points differential might suggest.

Seasiders outrun gritty Cardis

Jack Broadhurst (Tenby United)Tenby United 29 - Cardigan 16

Tenby United continued their good start to the new campaign as they beat a determined Cardigan team who battled hard throughout to raise hopes of a positive division three league campaign.

But The Seasiders always held the edge as they ran in excellent tries from newcomer Brad Cramb, Jack Broadhurst, Jack Brown, Jordan Asparassa and Rob Clarke, two of them converted by the influential Gwion Jones.

The Teifisiders’ only try came from a penalty try and Steve Leonard landed three penalties as they fought hard to stay in contention but The Seasiders held their nerve against a team from a section lower and were good value for a place in the second round.

Blues’ forwards power helps them to victory

Jamie Zambas (Haverfordwest)Neyland 6 - Haverfordwest 23

Haverfordwest ran in three tries without response at The Athletic Ground against a Neyland team which battled throughout and played some really good rugby to trail by just 6-8 at the three quarter stage of an interesting game where both teams deserved credit for playing a a terrific pace.

Outside half George Smith landed two penalties for the All Blacks but they had try-scoring chances as veteran winger Delme Bateman showed his paces and another old-timer in Robert Codd took the chance to play alongside his son Alex Codd, despite his 44 years.

Jack Evans opened The Blues’ account with a well-worked try before hooker Jamie Zambas and second row Liam Brown added second-half tries as they held the advantage up front, with skipper Carl Busch leading by example,  but faced ferocious defence from Steve Evans’ team.

Owain Roberts slotted a conversion and two penalties with his trusty left boot but the Blues had other missed chances which showed their rustiness at this time of the year.

Donovan’s pace a vital cog as Quins shock The Borderers

Tom Donovan (Pem Dock Quins)Pembroke Dock Harlequins 23 - Whitland 16

Two superb tries by lightning-quick winger Tom Donovan helped The Quins achieve a shock, but fully deserved, victory over a Whitland side which was behind at half time and could have few complaints about bowing out of the competition at this early stage.

Kieran Machin opened the Quins’ try count from a well-executed move that was converted by Ben Hathaway, who also added two penalties as The Quins’ pack played with plenty of fire.

The Borderers’ only try came from a penalty try and No 10 Geraint Jones slotted three conversions - but Donovan sped through for a quality try and then added an even better second to show what a threat he poses out wide if the Quins can get the ball to him early and give him the yard of space he needs.

Otters’ Development Squad fight back against The Saints

Shane Rossiter (Narberth Development)St Davids 13 - Narberth Development Squad 24

St Davids showed how much their hard work pre-season is paying off as they followed up a friendly win by pushing The Otters’ development squad all the way after leading by a point in a tight first half.

Outside half Aaron Forster opened the Saints’ account with a penalty but The Young Otters responded with a good try by Dylan Walsh which new recruit Jack Codd, who joined from Haverfordwest, converted.

Then The Saints claimed their first try from skipper Nathan Forster in front of the posts but his brother Aaron unaccountably missed the easy conversion to restrict his team to an 8-7 interval lead.

The Saints kept plugging away after the oranges but their only points came from an unconverted try by hooker Rhys Price and The Otters’ Development team added further tries from Harri Harries and Shane Rossiter.

Both were converted by Codd, who also added a penalty to give him a personal haul of nine points and help take his new team into the last eight.

Aber cause first KO Cup Shock

Milford Haven 22 - Aberaeron 30

Aberaeron caused the first shock of this year’s competition as they made the journey to The Obs and beat a Milford Haven team from a division higher and who looked very much in command as they led 19-3.

But they seemed to lose their shape after the break and could have few complaints about a defeat that was a tribute to Aber’s battling qualities and ability to turn pressure into points.

In that first half The Mariners had good tries by wingers Ieuan Davies and James Trueman, with a score from back rower Ben Groves sandwiched in between, two of them converted by Trueman - and all Aber could muster in between was a penalty from Rhodri Thomas.

In stark contrast, Milford’s only score after the break was a Trueman penalty whilst Aber had tries from Morgan Llywelyn, Dyfrig Dafis and a penalty try, with  man of the match Thomas adding a second penalty and Rhodri Jenkins notching both conversions and a penalty to take Aber through to the second round.
