Swansea City Ladies 4 - Cardiff City Ladies 2

Four Pembrokeshire ladies were part of the Swansea City side that claimed the FAW Women’s Cup on Sunday as Carrie Slack (Tenby), Amanda John (Porthgain), Ffion Ashman (Pembroke) and Stacey John (Milford Haven) helped the Swans win the trophy for only the second time in their history with a 4-2 victory over Cardiff City at Penybont.

In an entertaining match, played on the 3G surface at Bryntirion Park, it was the Swans who took the lead after 15 minutes as Wales Under 19 international Katy Hosford drove a shot into the  bottom corner but the Bluebirds responded as youngster Maria Martins went through on goal and hammered a shot into the roof of the net.

Swans take control

Before the break, however, the Swans scored twice in quick succession to take control as Sarah Adams put them back in front with a sweet strike, before Hosford added her second in stoppage time.

The Bluebirds responded after the break, though, as Lisa Bird evaded three tackles, rounded Ashman and halved the deficit, before the Bluebirds then pressed heavily for an equaliser, but with three minutes left, Adams pounced on a defensive error, beat Cardiff keeper Tayla Gould to the ball and then slotted home into the empty net to seal the cup for Ian Owen’s side.

It was a great experience for the Pembrokeshire quartet and the cup win will come as a real relief to the Swans, after they narrowly lost the Welsh Premier League Cup final 3-2 against Pilcs last month.
