Pembroke County Cricket Club - Division 5 pre-season preview

Reigning champions Whitland 3rds

Suddenly, the lowest tier not only has extra teams – but extra intrigue as well.

This season, there will be 11 teams involved after the renaissance of Fishguard and Goodwick and the addition of Llechryd 3rds. Also in the mix are Haverfordwest 4ths after they were relegated from the league above in 2019.

It makes it a very difficult league to predict. Whitland 3rds are the reigning champions after being skippered to the title by Sion Benjamin in 2019. They were only denied by promotion by dint of their 2nds being relegated into Division 4.

Ken Morris Cup champions Neyland 3rds

Neyland were Ken Morris Cup champions last season and seem to have a decent blend of youth and experience. Sam Laugharne leads a group of youngsters who are ever improving while the likes of Phil Sutton and Filigi Varghese are still more than useful at this level.

Jonathan Williams (left) will be key for Hundleton this summerHundelton, third last time out, always have the potential to be dangerous too if the likes of Jonathan Williams and Paul Fox get going. Cresselly you feel also have the potential to challenge, but their strength could be dictated by selection of their club sides above them.

None of Stackpole 2nds, Pembroke Dock 2nds, Pembroke 2nds, or Herbrandston 2nds were in the promotion picture last time out but a lot can change in two years, and all will aim to keep developing young players. The Town too will boast as experienced a line up as anyone.

But we still don’t know what Fishguard or Llechryd will bring to the party. It all makes for an unpredictable division, and one that in reality, any side can challenge for depending on who they have available.

Again, matches will be 35 overs per side and all in all, it’s great to have a fifth Division that suddenly looks very competitive and meaningful again.

After their recent cup success we’ll tip Neyland to be champions,  but Whitland have a title to retain and like others, will come hard too. It’s going to be an interesting campaign.
