Our Sean fulfils childhood dream by becoming Champion Jockey

Sean Bowen aboard Haiti Coulers to win 2025 Irish Grand National

Champion Jockey - Sean BowenSean Bowen has completed a whirlwind race season by being crowned the 2025 Champion Jockey, emulating his boyhood hero AP McCoy.

Pembrokeshire-born jockey Bowen missed out last season when he picked up a knee injury on Boxing Day when leading the Championship, but this season told a far different story as the talented jockey fulfilled his childhood dream.

Racing is in Sean’s family’s blood as mum Karen was a former point-to-point champion, father Peter, is a trainer. His younger brother, James, is also a jockey, whilst older brother Mickey, trains with father, taking over the licence in May 2025 after sharing it for a season.

The 27-year-old also incredibly picked up his milestone 1,000th winner back in February – it’s been his goal since he started riding professionally.

His ambition and drive is impressive as he has clocked up 75,000 miles in his car, driving anywhere and everywhere trying to ensure he wins as many races as possible; this season he has ridden in 902 races with 180 winners which has earned him the accolade of being awarded the Champion Jockey trophy – the last time a Welsh man won it was Fred Winter back in 1958.

Sean’s parents, Peter and Karen Bowen, have been successfully racing horses from their stables in Yet-Y-Rhug, Little Newcastle, Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire for many decades, Sean has had the best advice and support from them throughout his career. The dedication and hard work his parents have shown for many decades has definitely rubbed off on champion jockey Sean.

The season finished in superb style; it started with a five timer at Ffos Las. He followed up that success riding well known Pembrokeshire trainer  Rebecca Curtis-trained Haiti Couleurs to an Irish Grand National victory, Bowen said: “It’s the biggest win of my career, to go over there and beat the Irish was obviously brilliant, and to do it for Rebecca, who’s a Welsh trainer, was so good, it was an incredible day.”

Bowen then unbelievably went on to win the Bet 365 Gold Cup at Sandown aboard Resplendent Grey – trained by Olly Murphy.

Sean will have a break from racing as he prepares to get married to Harriet in July as the happy couple have planned to enjoy their honeymoon before the champion jockey gets on the saddle to try and win it again.
