Neyland A show real class

Indoor Cricket - Sunday, 18th March 2017

Participating Clubs: Haverfordwest B, Lawrenny & Neyland A
Venue: Tenby Leisure Centre
Umpire: Neil Croucher

Neyland A once again confirmed their indoor cricket pedigree as the current Welsh champions strolled to victory over Lawrenny and Haverfordwest B, who won the other match played but forfeited the points because they played a first team player in their eagerness to complete the fixture and not deny other teams the chance of some action!

Game One: Neyland A (138 for 1) beat Lawrenny (42 all out)

Sean HannonNeyland’s powerful batting line-up was quickly in evidence against Lawrenny as Ashley Sutton, Paul Murray, Patrick Bellerby and Patrick Hannon all passed the compulsory retirement mark and had to retire before skipper Sean Hannon finished on 14 not out and young Jake Booth scored 11 at the finish before giving James Buckle the only Lawrenny success.

Lawrenny needed a terrific start if they were to chase down such a challenging score but with Paul Murray in superb form behind the stumps they were soon in real bother as he took three sharp catches and a stumping whilst standing up to the wicket.

James Buckle top scored with 21 and Lance Osborne managed double figures but the loss of skipper Brad McDermott-Jenkins to a run out by Patrick Bellerby’s sharp fielding was a disaster and with Neyland bowling tight lines Lawrenny were shot out for only 42 runs!

Game Two: Lawrenny (117 for 3) lost to Haverfordwest B (118 for 5)

Nikhil MathiasA superb solo batting performance by Nikhil Mathias saw Haverfordwest B win this tussle off the last ball against a Lawrenny outfit which showed far better form with the bat.

Steve Campbell (26) and Matthew Lewis (25) gave Lawrenny a solid start before retiring and lance Osborne batted well for his 23 alongside James Buckle (19 not out) and ‘Mr Extras’ (19) as Jack Scriven and Nikhil Mathias were the pick of the Haverfordwest B team bowlers.

The Town B team’s batting was less than impressive as Lance Osborne and Matthew Lewis shared four quick wickets for Lawrenny alongside one success for skipper McDermott-Jenkins.

But, try as they might, they were unable to dislodge Mathias, who stroked two sixes and nine fours en route to his splendid undefeated 85, which was judged to perfection as he scored the winning runs from the very last ball of the match!

Game Three: Neyland A (176 for 4) beat Haverfordwest B (89 for 4)

Paul MurrayPaul Murray completed a fantastic ‘player of the day’ effort as he followed his unbeaten 26 runs and four victims in Neyland’s first game with another two scalps and another 69 not out as his team were too experienced for Haverfordwest B.

He lost opening partner Ashley Sutton to a ‘golden duck’, bowled by Kieran O’Connor, and although Patrick Bellerby and Patrick Hannon both got started they got themselves out – but then skipper Sean Hannon showed what a good all-rounder he is in the indoor game as he finished up with 37 not out, returning to join Murray after Jake Booth had also departed.

Hannon had two sixes in his speedy knock but it was Murray, with an innings liberally sprinkled with fours and sixes, who stole the show as The Town B amazingly conceded a massive 44 extras, 28 of them from wides!

Murray pouched two more good catches as Haverfordwest set off and the pressure told on their inexperienced batsmen as only Kieran O’Connor, who regularly plays for the club’s first team, top scored with 36 not out alongside 27 extras as Sean Hannon finished with 2 for 12 alongside a wicket each for brother Patrick and Ashley Sutton
