An innings full of class and power by Morgan Price-Richards and a superb four-over spell with the ball by Elliot Midgley were the key factors in Lamphey’s Ormond Plate Final win against a battling Whitland side which struggled at the start of each team’s innings and paid the inevitable price in an absorbing clash at Lawrenny Cricket Club, who as usual were perfect hosts for the game.

Sponsored by the family of the late David Lloyd, the first Hon Secretary of the Pembroke County Cricket Club, the trophy was presented on behalf of the family by his son Phil, with the current Hon Sec Steve Blowes deciding the man of the match award and giving it to opening bat Morgan Price-Richards for his classy innings of 60, which included six fours and two sixes.

He was joined by skipper Midgley as key contenders, the Hundleton all-rounder playing for Lamphey, who also put in a tremendous performance with the ball as he finished the Whitland resistance from his four-over spell, which included a maiden as he only conceded three singles along with 21 ‘dot balls’ whilst claiming FOUR WICKETS!

Lamphey openers lead the way

Callum O’Brien joined Price-Richards in an opening partnership of 67 before he was bowled by Rhys Williams, who later shifted Price-Richards- but by then Lamphey were on the way to a big score. Tomos Jones also claimed two wickets after he and Williams had rushed back from playing for Scarlets (West) rugby in a big win at Llandovery (have the oval-ball organisers forgotten this is still the ricket season?) to arrive just in time to play!

Morgan Oeppen also claimed a wicket for Whitland alongside Hari Owen but with Terrence Makridakis and Callum Williams also reaching double figures for Lamphey alongside 25 gifted  from ‘Mr Extras’ – a final score of 141 for 6 was always going to be a tough target for the Young Borderers.

Whitland reel from early losses

And it soon assumed mountainous proportions as rugby men Jones and Williams departed for a single apiece, quickly followed by Iestyn Davies to leave Whitland reeling at 6 for 3, with Jack Halsted grabbing two of them and Midgley involved with the other.

It says a great deal for the Whitland resolve that Rhys Davies and Hari Owen knuckled down in a gritty stand of 60 before O’Brien intervened to remove both in his vital spell, with Davies caught by Halsted for 19 and Owen striking four fours and two sixes before he was eventually adjudged lbw for top score of 42.

Then Midgley returned to the attack and caused Mayhem amongst the middle and lower order Whitland batsmen as only Oliver Wade reached double figures, and with the entire Lamphey team looking sharp in the field they were good value for victory in a match that was a credit to both clubs!
