Match One – Pembs Seniors (127 for 2) beat Neyland C (124 for 2) by 3 runs
There were runs galore in the opening encounter of the evening as the ‘Golden Oldies’ of local cricket reached a challenging final tally of 127 for 2 and the talented youngsters of Neyland C, well marshalled by skipper Phil Keen, fell an agonising four runs short of beating them in a tense finale.
Leading the way for The Seniors was Kevin Bowen, who again showed just why he is the Welsh Over 60s for the forthcoming World Cup with an immaculate 25 before retiring and eventually ending up with 51 not out alongside other successful batsmen in Andrew Williams (27 not out) and Neal Williams (27 not out). But Mark Hicks (3) and Ian Milsom (0) came and went to Korey Arran (2 for 28) before Rob Nicholas (6 not out) and ‘Mr Extras (12) helped The Seniors to their big score.
Neyland C made an equally good start through Korey Arran (26) and Ashley Watkins (25), who both retired as they sped to 55 in the fifth over to keep up with the clock, with Kieran Arran also looking good with 16 before he fell to Rob Nicholas (1 for 27) and skipper Keen chipping in with 26 not out. Neyland C still were slight favourites at this stage as Rod Murphy stroked 14 not out and Jason Milne (run out 6) also contributed but they needed four runs off the last ball and the greater experience of The Seniors saw them home in an excellent example of indoor cricket at this level.
Burton (127 for 5) beat Hundleton (90 for 3) by 37 runs
Burton are a strong, well-balanced side but they suffered a very early set back as Matthew Davies was run out for a duck in the first over before Will Ridge (16) and Morgan Scale got them in the speed-scoring mode – with Ridge bowled by Dave Lockyer (1 for 17) and Scale retiring on 25.
That allowed Dan Ridge and Jac Goldsmith (run out 16) to continue to build a sizeable score and although Dan Griffiths (8) was bowled by Will Lockyer (1 for 18) it allowed Morgan Scale (42 not out) and Dan Ridge (32 not out) to pile on late runs as 14 extras also boosted an already useful score.
Hundleton also made a good start as Dave Lockyer opened with 20 out of 44 before being well caught by Goldsmith off Dan Griffiths (1 for 17) from a ball that seemed destined to scream towards the boundary – and his opening partner Steff Williams reached 25 before retiring, having featured in another useful partnership with talented youngster Archie Reeves (23), bowled by Burton man of the match Morgan Scale (1 for 19).
Will Lockyer was run out for a single and the burton bowlers bowled good lines and their fielders gave little away so the required run rate climbed beyond the reach of Wil Nicolas (marking a guest appearance with 9 not out) and Craig Williamson (3 not out) had little chance of making an impact as Burton won comfortably.
Pembroke 2nds (142 for 2) beat Herbrandston (91 for 4) by 51 runs
Herbrandston’s run of four wins on the trot came to an abrupt end as they encountered a Pembroke Seconds outfit who, one blip apart, have looked a very experienced squad and are favourites to win the section silverware.
Yet Herbie got off to a flying start as Billy Woods, the top Pembroke run gatherer this campaign, was caught behind by Dai Malloy off a good delivery by his son Charlie (1 for 17), without scoring.
But from then on it was Pembroke who dominated with the bat and when they had finished their 10 overs their total was a mighty 142 for 2, thanks to Ceri Brace (42 not out), Will Davies (34 not out), Andrew Price (25 not out) and Will Davidson-Randell (27) not out – and with last man Charlie Perkins (6) the only other wicket to fall as he was run out in the late chase for even more runs.
Herbie also suffered an early set-back as Charlie Malloy (4) was well caught by Price off Perkins, who also removed Rob Kingston (12) with the aid of a Will Davies catch to end with fine figures of 2 for 17.
Atticus Kingston reached 25 but was removed by Andrew Price after sharing a good stand with Harry Nicholas, who retired on 25 and ended up unbeaten on 30, but by then Herbie were well behind the clock and Tom Philpott was run out for 4, although Dai Malloy chipped in with 11 not out, they had lost their momentum in the vital sixth and seventh overs (only six runs scored) when they had looked better-placed after scoring 53 for 1 at the half-way stage.
