Cresselly ‘Big Guns’ cause mayhem
Cresselly Ladies stormed to victory over old rivals Hook Ladies as they built a massive first innings lead and despite brave efforts from their opponents after tea they made sure of victory with a solid second-innings tally that left Hook with a target of 200 to win from only 20 overs!
Played at its now-traditional home at the picturesque countryside venue of Bosherston and Stackpole, where Clive played his local cricket, Cresselly showed their positive intent after skipper Ffion Ashman
FIRST INNINGS:
Cresselly won the toss and elected to bat first.

Hook started well enough as they conceded only 25 runs in the first five overs from Maisy Davies and Kacey Arran, who also bowled Eleri Williams cheaply in the process – but then the cricketing storm established by Lucy Johnson and Ffion Ashman erupted in bright sunshine as they added 70 runs in the next five overs.
They added 103 runs before Sam Rossiter had Ffion caught by Maddie Potter for 57, including nine boundaries in only 45 balls), and the Hook skipper also shifted Ava Midgley cheaply three runs late to momentarily stem the tide.
But the respite didn’t last long and with Lauren Davies providing a little cameo at the other end, before Bethan Chapman removed her and Jess Gibby – but Lucy continued to create mayhem as another 59 runs came in the final four overs, including 20 off the 20
th over, as Lucy ended undefeated on 78, made from only 61 balls and including seven fours and two sixes, that sent Cresselly to a massive 186 for 5, assisted by 25 extras.
Hook hit by early set-backs

In sharp contrast, Hook struggled from the outset as key run-gatherers Kacey Arran and Jemma Phillips both departed without troubling the scorers – and Mari Cole showed what a prospect she is by also clean bowling a third victim in Kate Farr to leave Hook in dire straits at 38 for 3, where her four-over spell earned her amazing figures of 3 for 21.
Hook skipper Sam Rossiter tried hard to settle things down and found a measure of support from Elin Miller and Maisy Davies but both fell respectively to Ffion and Lucy as they continued their batting involvement with the ball, with the latter grabbing other wickets to end with a 3 for 11 haul.
Lauren Davies also claimed the vital wicket of Hook skipper Rossiter, for a gritty 45 in 40 deliveries, including eight boundaries – and Cresselly enjoyed the delicious tea with the bonus of being a massive 79 runs to the good!

SECOND INNINGS:
Cresselly consolidate well after a bad start

Cresselly’s hopes of a flying start to their second innings were soon dented as Kacey Arran bowled Lucy Johnson for 2 runs in 11 balls and Elin Miller did the same to Ffion Ashman, her two runs coming off nine deliveries.
But then Eleri Williams made amends for her early dismissal in the first innings by joining forces with Ava Midgley in an unbroken stand of 90 before they ran out of overs.
Eleri belted six fours and a six in her 57 not out, whilst Aval showed what a good all-rounder she has become with 42 not out in 41 balls, including three fours and a six. Throw in 17 extras and Hook were left with the gargantuan task of scoring at ten runs per over in the final innings to take home the silverware.
Kate Farr and Kacey Arran raised a measure of home as they put on 40 runs for the first wicket but then Ffion Ashman intervened dramatically as she shifted both, plus Jemma Phillips and Elin Miller, all within the space of 8 runs, to leave Hook hopes in tatters!
Again, Sam Rossiter battled hard to build a decent total, despite a pulled leg muscle, a damaged finger sustained trying to take an earlier catch, plus a sore head after a mistimed pull off a full toss ended with, as one rural onlooker commented, ‘a bit of a bang on the bonce!’
Sam eventually departed, run out by Lois Howlett-Dyer, and fast bowler Maisy Davies showed her batting skills with four and three sixes en route to 30 before she fell to Lucy Johnson in another three-wicket stint that certainly secured her player of the match selection.
The only slight consolation for Hook was the fact that they outscored their opponents by one run in the second innings but Cresselly were worthy winners and received the trophy from Cath Adams, competed for annually in memory of her father.
When she was Cath Huxley, she played for Stackpole’s men’s teams and graced this ground with her bowling, which earned her selection for Wales, and after marrying Narberth’s outstanding batsman Richard Adams she continued to play for a number of years for Hook Ladies.
She nicely rounded off a cracking day of ladies’ cricket, which was played in a competitive spirit under the guidance of umpires Chris Stapleton and Huw Simpkins, with Meg Arthur scoring for Cresselly after missing the final through injury, and Clarissa Lewis doing a similarly expert job for Hook Ladies!
