Junior Rugby News:

A squad of just 12 determined youngsters from Llangwm RFC Under-11s made the journey to Minehead over the Bank Holiday weekend to compete in the prestigious Tigers Challenge Rugby Tournament — and returned having made a lasting impression on the national stage.

Facing a formidable field of 48 teams from across the UK and Ireland — many boasting squads of over 30 players — the Wasps were clear underdogs from the outset. However, showing remarkable resilience and teamwork, the Llangwm boys rose to the occasion in true Wasps’ fashion.

Day One proved outstanding, with Llangwm topping their group after impressive victories over Eton Manor RFC, CIYMS RFC Sharks and Cwmbran RFC. Their fast-paced, fearless rugby set the tone early and caught the attention of spectators and opponents alike.

The challenges intensified on Day Two, with tough fixtures against Tondu RFC, Ballymena RFC and Bryncethin RFC. Despite a series of hard-fought encounters and an immense team effort, the Wasps were unable to maintain their lead.

Nevertheless, the squad left the pitch with heads held high, having given everything in every match. Their efforts did not go unnoticed though because  at the presentation ceremony, the team proudly received their medals from former British & Irish Lions captain, Martin Johnson — a fitting recognition for their achievements.

They put the village on the map

Arriving as outsiders, Llangwm departed having firmly put their name on the map. Their conduct, both on and off the field, was exemplary throughout, reflecting great credit on their club, their village and their families.

Special congratulations go to Jake Evans and Steff Hughes, who were both recognised with individual player awards for their outstanding performances across the tournament.

The team’s success was made possible by the dedication of coaches Gethin Thomas, Simon Brick and Nick Hughes, alongside team manager Kathryn Homes, whose tireless work behind the scenes ensured everything ran smoothly.

It was a weekend to remember — and a team to watch for the future!
