Liam Cullen goes on loan with 'The Imps'

Liam Cullen plays for Lincoln City
Liam Cullen, who is Swansea City’s 22 year old striker, has moved to Lincoln City on a loan deal until the end of the season and played his first game in a 1-0 defeat to Cambridge United – and we spoke to Liam, who hails from Kilgetty,  yesterday to find out how things are going.

“It’s been an exciting start,” admitted Liam, “and I have been made very welcome by everybody at the LNER Stadium, including chairman Clive Nates and manager Michael Appleton, who has loads of experience as manager of West Bromwich Albion, Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn and Leicester City before coming here.

“I played 86 minutes for Swansea City in the FA Cup against Southampton before agreeing to go on loan to Lincoln and I am looking forward to the challenge. I signed last Thursday and will be here for the rest of the season and hopefully I can show my ability to score goals and then return to the Liberty Stadium next season.

Impressed by the crowd support – but not by the Cambridge City goalkeeper!

“The crowd for the game on Saturday was very noisy and made me feel welcome from the start and I was delighted that I played for 85 minutes before being taken off, because that is what I hope to achieve here since I really need the game time and full involvement.

“I obviously would have loved to have started out with a goal but although we played some good football the Cambridge United keeper made some terrific saves and we lost 1-0 – but I enjoyed the game and had some positive feedback afterwards.

“At the moment the congested fixture list means we will be playing on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons but I don’t mind that alongside training sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, plus a shorter session on Friday to look at the technical side of our game.”

Lots of travel for family – but they’ll give the usual brilliant support

The only downside is the fact that if parents Louise and Brian, plus grandad Graham Jenkins and nan Rose have so much further to travel but Brian was at the match on Saturday and thought he had played well. He was supposed to be accompanied by grandad ‘Jenks’ but when he learned that it meant an overnight stop he told us he decided to wait for the better weather!

Liam has joined another Swansea City player in 21 year old Morgan Whittaker at Lincoln City so he already had someone there who told him that it was a progressive club – and Liam is looking forward to moving in to the apartment The Imps are providing for him.

So it is all systems go for Liam Cullen and his friends and many admirers in Pembrokeshire will wish the talented, but very modest, young footballer every success for the rest of this season and his forthcoming career!
