When Leigh Broome's godson Levi was diagnosed with a rare heart condition, the Hakin United player-coach vowed to do something to help.
 
Broome, well known in Pembrokeshire sporting circles for his involvement with The Vikings and also Milford Haven RFC, set about organising a golf tournament - and it proved a stunning success with more than £15,000 raised for a vital charity.
 
Levi, now five-years-old, was born with a condition called hypoplastic left-heart syndrome, which affects blood flow and organ development.
 

Fantastic support at golf day

 
“It’s a big thing to go through life with that condition," Broome explained, "so, I said I’ll try and raise a bit of money for him - and with the help of others we came up for a plan for a golf day."
 
The event took place at Milford Haven Golf Club last August and the entry list exceeded expectations, with 32 teams - and 128 players - all taking part in the Texas Scramble event.
 
“The boys in work backed me and the company, Puma Energy, were a massive help in supporting a great day," he continued.

"We raised £7,500 but Stevie Kenyon, one of the managers with Puma, said that they would match that so our final figure ended up being £15,336."
 
More than £3,600 of that sum was raised on the day via raffles and other ventures, and after the final cheque presentation took place this month, Broome was keen to express his gratitude to everyone involved.
 
“I have to say thank you to Puma Energy for everything they have done, and to Milford Haven Golf Club for hosting the day, especially the green keepers and the staff.

"At Hakin United, the boys dug deep, and also at Neyland RFC through Chris Busby. He got people involved there and between the two clubs they raised a couple of thousand.
 
"Elliott Dee donated a WRU signed shirt that went for £600. Ben Aldred at Hakin got in contact with Liam Cullen, who provided a signed Swansea shirt that went for £550. Everybody dug deep and I can only say a massive thank you to everyone."
 
Broome also paid tribute to Timmy Roberts, Nina Thomas, and Simon Nicholas for their contributions, as well as all sponsors and local businesses that sponsored tees and made donations to help out.
 

‘Little Hearts Matter’ thrilled by such a huge donation

 
All the money raised went to the ‘Little Hearts Matter’ charity, who told Broome that the sum received represented one of their largest ever donations.
 
And he admitted the outcome had exceeded his own expectations.
 
"A few of us sat there 12 months ago thinking if we raise £1000 that is better than nothing. That came in within minutes - so we targeted £2000. Before we knew it was £15000, a massive amount of money which we hope will help save a lot of lives going forward."
 
Broome also confirmed he would be organising a similar event this year, with the charity to benefit to be confirmed at a later date.
