Over 100 former players, officials and guests attended the annual ‘Pork Supper’ at Haverfordwest Rugby Club recently where they were regaled by stories of life playing for Wales from Graham Price, the former Pontypool, Wales and British Lion prop Graham Price.

Graham was joined by Bobby Windsor and Charlie Faulkner as the ‘Pontypool Front Row’ which not only played together for club, country and the Lions but was immortalised in song by Welsh poet/songwriter/singer Max Boyce. Both his front row colleagues received mentions aplenty and so did other stars he played with and against in a distinguished rugby career, starting with his illustrious debut when he scored a 75 metre try against France in Paris.

Graham was introduced by former Blues’  player Geoff Williams, now the Head of Sport at BBC Wales and as well as a superb series of reminiscences he also took part in a question and answer session organised by Bill Carne, the MC for the evening.

As tradition demands, the soup and pork dinner was served by members of the youth and under 15 teams, who were treated to their meal afterwards and were allowed to enjoy Graham Price’s after-dinner speech. They were thanked by organiser Gareth Griffiths, alongside the excellent bar staff, and Gareth also presented Graham Price with a special gift or two from club president David Griffiths, who was unavoidably required elsewhere.

As one former player said afterwards,
“What a treat to hear so many great stories from a real legend of Welsh Rugby,” and this was a view surely held by everyone in attendance!

Brynmor and Dafydd make it a great night at a special Otters’ evening

Former Welsh rugby players Brynmor Williams and Dafydd Jones were special guests at an ‘Evening of Rugby’ at Narberth Rugby Club which was provided by insurance company Thomas Carroll.

Both work for the company, which has just moved into Haverfordwest and is already beginning to sponsor clubs in the area, with another former Lion in Robert Jones also involved alongside Brian Hawkins, the Manderwood Pembrokeshire Football League Hon Secretary and Simon Lawrence, who plays football for Goodwick United.

Club stewardess Ann Lonsdale provided an excellent two-course meal for those in attendance before Brynmor, who originally hails from Cardigan, was in typically good form as he spent 40 minutes talking about his four caps at scrum half for Wales (he was 28 times reserve to Gareth Edwards!) and three Lions’ appearances in New Zealand. Introduced by club official Bill Ridge, he not only shared some lovely stories but also showed his skill at mimicry so it was almost possible to imagine some of those former ‘greats’ being in the room!

He was then joined in a lively question and answer session by Dafydd Jones, who played 42 times for Wales, including six caps against England, and both were very honest in what they had to say.  Brynmor felt Wales would win narrowly at Twickenham but Dafydd even forecast an 18-9 winning margin in a light-hearted debate about the game.

It all added up to a cracking evening and those in attendance were very lucky to be there for good food, good fellowship and the chance to listen to two very genuine characters of Welsh Rugby!
