Ladies Cricket - County youngsters battle hard

Ffion Ashman and Sam Rossiter discuss the run rate

Welsh Ladies Cricket Premier League:

Pembrokeshire (134 all out) lost to Western Steel (135 for 5) by 5 wickets

Umpires: Jonathan Twigg and Simon Richards
Scorers Karen & Owen Hughes

Venue: Imble Lane Pembroke Dock

Sam Rossiter - led county youngsters with the top scorePembrokeshire Ladies continued their policy of providing opportunities at a higher level by fielding no fewer than SEVEN players between the ages of 13 and 19 against an experiences Western Steel XI and although they eventually went down by five wickets they again showed how beneficial this will be because there were some outstanding performances as kipper Sam Rossiter again led by example as she claimed the top score from either team.

The team again received a warm well  on a cracking track  provided by Pembroke Dock CC at their Imble Lane Ground but Pembs made a disappointing start when Phoenix Phillips was run out just when she looked to ready to build a good innings and Jodie Lewis also departed before skipper Sam’s brilliant knock of 69 included ten boundaries, with Ffion Ashman and Katie Gibbins sharing 32 runs before they fell at key times against tight bowling by Niamh Mansell. Carys Leggett-Jones and Gemma Pugh, all very experienced players for Western Steel.

From then on the inexperience of the Pembs batters became evident but all will have learned by competing at this level as they then saw the opposition building an opening stand of 82 by Fiona Walker and Alice How before Katie Gibbins finally removed the former batter – and then Phoenix gave the county team hopes as she shifted Alice and then quickly followed with the wickets of Niamh and then Erica Holland, the latter neatly stumped by Ffion Ashman.

Imogen Hicks then bowled Holly Clarke and Western Force were struggling a little on 104 for 5 – but then their greater experience paid off as skipper Karen Hughes and especially Carys Leggett-Jones saw them home in an unbroken stand of 32.

It left Pembs losing on the day but continuing to build these talented youngsters experiences, which will be invaluable in the years to come!
