Kilgetty Youth were worthy winners of the Ormond Youth Cup Final as skipper Kurtis Marsh led by example with two half centuries, one undefeated, and wickets in both innings.
Their counterparts from Carew never gave up trying in difficult weather conditions but were already in trouble at tea as they trailed by 44 runs and, Harry Cook apart. Their ‘big guns’ didn’t fire well whilst Kilgetty’s did.
Marsh makes a great start
Put in to bat first, Kilgetty lost Tom Lewis early to Iori Hicks but Marsh was joined by Harry Phillips (two big sixes in his 29) before he was one of Rhys Grigg’s two victims – but by then the Kilgetty pair had shared a partnership of 67.
Marsh carried his bat for a vital 61 not out, with seven boundaries and off only 67 balls, and helped his side to 106 for 3, no mean feat in the conditions.
Carew find it hard going
Carew’s response was labored as Dafydd Bevan (8) and Max Brindley (9) were the top scorers against the attacking bowling of Ollie Gamble (1 for 12), Marsh (2 for 11), Harry Phillips (1 for 16), Jack Tucker (1 for 10) and especially Jac Waters, with a 2 for 5 spell in his four overs. Their only fault was to bowl 21 wides in 23 extras but Carew were unable to score a single run in their final three overs and went in to tea a huge 44 runs behind.
Kilgetty set a killer target

As Kilgetty looked to build on such a major advantage Marsh was given an early life and made Carew pay with another half century (five fours and off 57 balls) in an excellent opening stand of 85 with Tom Lewis, who remained undefeated throughout the innings with an accomplished 53 not out (three fours and 58 deliveries).
Harry Cook took two late wickets as the stand-out Carew bowler but it was a massive challenge as they faced 160 runs to win.
Early wickets a hug set-back
It became an even more mammoth task as Marsh and Gamble reduced Carew to 13 for 3 before Iori Hicks (19) joined Harry Cook in a half-century partnership but fell to Jac Waters again intervened with a 2 for 14 cameo. Dom Booth contributed 10 runs and Cook blasted a deserved 52 not out that included two fours and a very big six.
But Kilgetty kept a tight rein on the run rate and were worthy winners after being runners-up the previous season, and clearly delighted to take the silverware back to Kilgetty after a long wait, their previous success coming as long ago as 1962!
