writes Martin Jones.
Captain of Kilgetty Olly Badham won the toss against his counterpart Morgan Britton of St Ishmaels and chose to bat. The game was a superb advert for Pembrokeshire Under 13's cricket and certainly lived up to its expectation with an excellent and a high standard of cricket in all three departments by both teams
Morgan Britton (1-9) removed the dangerous Taylor Lewis without scoring but then Ollie Cook 26 retired (3x4) and Olly Badham 19(2x4) built slowly with some excellent shots all around the ground with some very good timing of the ball. Charlie Welsh struck back for St Ishmaels 2-20 with Jenson Griffiths 1-10 and Caydyn McGuire 2-17.
Morgan Broomhall 12 and a hard hitting 25 retired by Adam Kettle (5x4) certainly increased the tempo. All of the St Ishmaels bowlers uncharacteristically struggled in the very strong wind and Mr Extras reached 38 with the Kilgetty innings finishing on 133-6.
You could imagine Trefor Badhams half time briefing keep the bowling tight lads and reduce those extras. St Ishmaels needed a good start and that's what they had with Charlie Welsh 26 (5x4) retired but the introduction of Olly Badham into the attack in the 8
th Over removed the Dangerous Caydyn McGuire 13 with Olly finishing with figures of 3-12 and a run out.
The rest of the St Ishmaels batters tried to keep up the tempo but with tight bowling by Cody Glanville 1-11 Teddy Griffiths 3 -12 and Jack Cole 2-10 no one else could quite reach double figures. With Mr Extras 10 a telling factor the St Ishmaels innings finished on 88 all out with Kilgetty deserved winners on the night
It was great to see a supportive crowd at the game who enjoyed an excellent evening of entertaining cricket.
In the presentation after the match Martin Jones ( Junior Organiser) congratulated both sides on reaching the the final. Both sides should be proud of their Junior sections. He thanked Cresselly for hosting the final including Richard Arthur and Glyn Cole the grounds staff.
Afterwards the Club on refreshments for the players, which was well received. Thanks to Steffan Jenkins for his organisation.
He thanked umpires Chris Stapleton and Allan Hansen, scorers Becky Badham and Wendy Bradshaw who all contributed to the evening’s entertainment.
Last and by no means least he thanked sponsors Colin John of Llewelyn Davies & Co Chartered Accountants for his continued and valuable support of junior cricket in the county.
With the Final rearranged on a number of occasions unfortunately Colin had a prior engagement but it was Great to see the County President Trefor Evans present who presented the medals and trophies on behalf of Colin.
The player of the match award sponsored by the Williams family in memory of the late John Williams, who had umpired this final for countless years and whom was a distinguished umpire, highly respected by all in Pembrokeshire cricket and further afield was presented by Hilary Williams, widow with her sons Mark and Phil present.
Umpire Chris Stapleton gave a special mention to Charlie Welsh for his performance but this year’s man of the match award quite rightly went to Olly Badham (Kilgetty) for his all-round performance with the bat, ball and in the field.
