Talented Sporting Youngsters Feature - Rhys Tennick
Talented Sporting Feature No 4 - Name: Rhys Tennick
Today we are delighted to feature a talented young all-round sportsman from Neyland who clearly has rugby as his favourite sport but also is a very useful cricketers. Rhys Tennick hails from a sporting family because his dad John and granddads MikeTennick and Chan Bowen are also well known in the area.
Age: 12
Club played for?
Neyland RFC Under 13s, Hook CC and Haverfordwest High School Year Eight Rugby.
People who have helped you?
Delme Bateman, Simon Philips and my dad John and mum Louise.
My granddad Mike Tennick has also been a great supporter and in Hook Cricket I have had lots of help and advice from Matthew Holder.
Position - why play there?
I play full back, like my grandad Chan Bowen (Carmarthen Athletic & Neyland) and great-grandad, Freddie Johns, who played in the backs for Neyland, and I enjoy catching the ball and running back at the defence. My dad John played at No 8 and my uncle Robert Johns played as a prop for Neyland too.
Successes?
We (Neyland Under 12s) won the Plate Final last season by beating Pembroke Dock Quins and our coaches said we did well to get there. We also played well in festivals at Pencoed, St Clears, Newcastle Emlyn and Llanelli Wanderers.
Favourite local player?
Ben Williams (Neyland back row) because he is always involved, tackles hard and scores tries.
Favourite top sportsman and why?
Beauden Barrett because he plays 15 (or 10) and is an All Black who is brilliant at running the ball in attack and defends well too.
Other sports played?
Cricket, I play for Hook Under 13s as a left-arm medium-pace bowler and middle-order batsman. I went for West Wales Trials in Carmarthen the other week. I had a top score last season of 27 not out and took 1 for 4 against Pembroke Dock and 2 for 25 versus Lamphey. I also played for Hook at under 15 level and I’ve just been picked for the Cricket Wales (West) under 13s Pathway squad. I was part of the Hook under 11s who beat Cresselly in the final.
Ambitions?
To play full back for the Ospreys and Wales. I go with my parents and younger brother Caelan to watch the Ospreys and my favourite Welsh player is Gareth Anscombe.
