Under 13 Final Lawrenny v Whitland at Cresselly  Monday 5th August

Pembrokeshire Under 13 Semi-Finals

Hook 90 for 6 Whitland 94 for 3

An excellent team performance from Whitland saw them deservedly book their place in the county final. The Hook team put in a spirited performance but on the night it wasn’t enough to see off the opposition. The weather threatened to spoil the evening but did relent, with Whitland skipper Luc Owen winning the toss and inviting Hook skipper Dillon James to bat first.

Hook had batted well throughout the season posting some big totals. However, the Whitland attack produced a tremendous sustained effort of accuracy, backed up by some excellent ground fielding, to stifle the batsmen. Hook were dealt an early blow with the loss of Liam Miller (7), falling to a brilliant catch in the deep from Ethan Ryan off the bowling of Charlie Bujega. Charlie then snapped up the Hook skipper Dillon to return a priceless 2 for 14 spell.

Hook soon found themselves at 18 for 3 as Cian Rees (1 for 11) removed Jack Phillips for 6. It was left to Rhys Phelps and Oscar Willington to try and rebuild. These two played patiently to take the score to 60. Oscar continued his recent form with an excellent knock of 25 retired including four powerful boundaries. Rhys (6) was joined by Charlie Kelly (6), these two rotating the strike well before both fell to Rhys Jones (2 for 8), one courtesy of a good catch from Cian.

With Whitland well on top, Kieran Sinclair and Morgan Bowen dug deep to seek a defendable total. Kieran (3) batted well before he was smartly stumped by Daf Howells off the bowling of Lee Strudley (1 for 4). But Morgan stuck to his task and added a precious 13 not out, striking three excellent boundaries and taking his team to 90 for 6 at the close.

Daf James and Rhys Jones opened up the chase for Whitland. Daf set off with real positive intent hitting a quick fire 11, including two boundaries. Oscar then made the breakthrough, clean bowling Daf in his excellent spell of 1 for 6. This brought Luc to the wicket and the skipper did not disappoint, delivering a match changing innings of 25 retired. Luc hit six clean powerful boundaries, putting his team in a very strong position in double quick time.

He was replaced by Charlie who again played some super strokes to score 15 including three boundaries. Like Luc, Charlie found the gaps in the field with the Hook team struggling to contain the scoring rate. Charlie was then dismissed by Noah Goodridge (1 for 4) courtesy of a brilliant catch from Morgan Bowen at mid-off, capping a fine performance from Morgan.

Rhys Jones (4) batted really well until he was dismissed by Liam Miller (1 for 15), having been the glue of the innings. It was left to Ethan Ryan (10 not out) to take his team home with two boundaries to the clear delight of his teammates.

A well-deserved win and place in the final then for Whitland, in a game played in great spirit amongst a number of regional cricket colleagues. Matthew Davies and Wayne Howells were rightly delighted with their team’s effort.

The very best of luck to Whitland in the county final.
