Pembroke Amateur Boxing Club's talented youngster James Probert continues to blaze a trail across Europe with his pugilistic skills and after recently earning a gold award as part of the Welsh Junior team in Lithuania is now preparing to represent his country in the World Junior Championships in St Petersburg, Russia.
James was part of the four-man squad taken by Welsh coaches Colin Jones and Mark James to Lithuania for the Ricardo Tamulio Tournament and met Lithuanian boxer Ioan Peckis in the final after the home boxer had looked good in beating the Russian representative in the semi-final.
But he found James too much of a hand full in the final as James used his full range of skills to keep out of trouble and establish a good points lead to earn himself the gold medal, to the obvious delight of parents Nathan, who coaches at Pembroke ABC, and mum Rachel, who helps with all the administration work, and were there to cheer him on.
Of the other boxers in the Welsh squad, John-Paul Wilson (North Wales) also earned a gold medal and there was silver for another North Walian in Connor Jones, whilst Rhys Edwards (Rhondda) lost narrowly on the first day to prevent a medal quartet.
Coaches Jones and James must have been impressed because the same foursome are now off to St Petersburg (Russia) to compete in the World Junior Championships from 4th to 12th September.
Nathan will be in the under 46kgs class for boys born between 1999 and 2000 and as usual Nathan and Rachel will be nearby, watching proudly as their talented son competes for Wales, again flying the Pembrokeshire Flag with real distinction!
