Hook defeat Whitland in Junior League Under 15 Final

Hook Under 15s

Hook 108-2 beat Whitland 104-6-6 by 8 wickets

This year’s final was between the top two sides, from the North and South Zones with the Final being a closely contested affair but was eventually settled in the 19th over.

Hook beat Narberth in the one semi-final and Whitland beat Neyland in the other.

Owen Phelps Captain of Hook won the toss and asked his counterpart Harri Jones from Whitland to bat.

Joe Phillips (1-8) made a good start for Hook bowling Harri of his 3rd ball. This brought Jacob Owen to the crease to join his brother Luc.

The pair built up the score gradually despite the best efforts of Lucas Davies, Harry Makepeace and lewis Miller. The brothers took the score to 50 off 10 overs with some fine shots around the ground.

The introduction of Dom Asson (2-17) proved crucial removing the dangerous Luc Owen (25) and then Jay Morris shortly after. Jacob Owen retired on (35 4x4) and with 6 overs to go all the Whitland batsmen put bat to ball with Oli Bujega (9) being bowled by the returning Lucas Davies (1-14).

Umpires Allan Hansen and Ian MilsomAn excellent throw by Harry Makepeace saw Corey Lewis run out and a quick bit of thinking by Seth Willington whipping the stump up with ball in hand as the bails were dislodged saw the Whitland Innings finish on 104-6 in their 20 overs.

Opinion was divided at this stage and it was important for Whitland to get off to a strong start. Luc Owen provided this by having Lewis Miller adjudged LBW off his 2nd ball.

This brought Joe Phillips to the crease to join Captain Aled Phelps and the game followed a similar pattern as both built their innings with some fine defence and attacking strokes despite the best efforts of Corey Lewis, Harri Jones, Jacob Owen and Charlie Bujega.   After 10 overs the scores were fairly level with Hook on 51.

It was at this stage with the two experienced batsmen well set, they accelerated before both retired on 35 Owen (5x4) and Joe (4x4). With New Batsmen Seth Willigton and Lucas Davies (8*) at the crease and with some tight overs by the Whitland bowlers the game progressed to the later stages. However, Seth with some fine shots and good running by Lucas swung the game Hooks way.

Seth (16) was eventually out to a superb catch in the deep by Jacob Owen of his brother Luc (2-25) with Harry Makepeace hitting a 4 in the 19th over to seal the victory.

The game was an excellent example of how cricket should be played in a competitive manner but in the correct spirit. Both teams showed off their cricket skills to the large crowd that gathered at St Ishmaels.

In the presentation after the match, Martin Jones (Junior Organiser) congratulated both sides on reaching the Final with some excellent play by both.  Coaches Jamie Phelps and Mark Lee also deserve great praise for their efforts.
