Delighted skipper Josh Lewis

Cresselly retained the Ormond Youth Cup as they fended off a strong challenge from a Narberth team which was very much in the game at the half way stage but conceded a big second-innings score and found the pressure of trying to chase it down too much of a challenge.

Positive start by Cresselly

Cresselly elected to bat first on a good track at Carew and although they lost Archie Hillier-Wood (10) and Ollie Berry (9) respectively to  McKenzie McDonald and Jake Thomas (from a good catch by Lewis Reed)  by the time they had scored 29 runs they then established a partnership of 99 through Charlie Arthur and Jamie Goldsworthy.

Arthur, who is now playing first-team cricket for Cresselly scored a masterful 58 and Goldsworthy, another with first team experience this season, hit a strong 37 not out before Arthur departed in the late chase for runs, caught by McDonald off the bowling of  Ifan Thomas.

It was a strong tally at 130 for 3 after they had built steadily in the first half but then doubled their score to 90 between overs 10 and 15 and kept up their run rate until the end of the innings.

Narberth give chase as everyone contributed . . .

Narberth certainly weren’t overawed by the challenge as their early batsmen also put their experience of first and second team cricket to good effect. Shay Norcross and Charlie Phillips gave chase before the former player was caught by keeper Goldsworthy off Ollie Berry’s bowling for 13 but skipper Wil Nicolas joined the fray and added 39 with Phillips before being stumped by Goldsworthy off Josh Lewis for a hard-hitting 29 with the score on 69.

Phillips continued to bat sensibly as he and Finley Davies added another 51 runs before Phillips was adjudged lbw to Charlie Arthur in the final over for top score of 42, with Davies also doing well with 22 not out.

It meant Narberth were 10 runs in arrears at the break but it was still very much all to play for.

Cresselly claim an even bigger score

Narberth were clearly hoping to take early wickets from opening bowlers Shay Norcross and McKenzie McDonald but they didn’t come until Charlie Arthur was run out for 13 with the score on 26.

But Archie Hillier-Wood was joined by Ollie Berry in a productive partnership before Hillier-Wood shifted by Jake Thomas for 30 – and that was when Cresselly raised the tempo as Berry and Wood showed their ability to score quickly through running well between the wickets but also punishing anything loose.

They shared a vital three-figure stand before Berry was caught late on by Phillips off Norcross but with Goldsworthy still there for his second big score, this time 45 not out, Cresselly had sped to a healthy 142 for 3, leaving Narberth a total of 153 to win.

Narberth lose vital wickets at key times

Ollie Berry - good all-round for Cresselly - Pic by Susan McKehonNarberth hopes of a strong start were dented as they lost the powerful Shay Norcross for a single, bowled by Corey Lewis and although Charlie Phillips, Wil Nicholas and Finley Davies all managed double figures no-one was able to stay long enough to really influence matters George Davies claimed two wickets., Morgan Lewis grabbed another and there was run out.

Elliot Evans batted well for his undefeated 30 but no-one else could stay with him as Cresselly bowled well and fielded even better so Narberth were bowled out for 107 to leave them 45 runs short of their opponents.

The match was played in an excellent spirit as umpires Chris Stapleton and Gareth Brace did a good job and it was skipper Josh Lewis who received the trophy from Carew CC chairman Barry Ansell and performed a spectacular raising of the trophy which almost saw the lid go into orbit!

His team-mate Jamie Goldsworthy was adjudged man of the match by John Davies for his innings of 37 not out and 45 not out, plus three catches and two stumpings, with a large crowd sensibly spread around the outfield provided a great audience for the talented young players on show to appreciate.
