Junior Finals’ Day - Part Three

The games in these age groups are also a pleasure to watch, and we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk love attending this special day for aspiring rugby players and would like to pay our tribute to everyone involved, from youth organiser Ken Davies to festival organiser Andrew ‘Twts’ Thomas and everyone from all the clubs who contributed to such a fantastic festival of rugby – and we are already looking forward to next year’s junior rugby ‘Big Day’.

Under 14s Final:

 Tenby U14s

Tenby United 20 - Aberystwyth 10

The under 14s final featured two very strong squads from Tenby United and Aberystwyth and ultimately the Young Seasiders prevailed because they took their chances in an entreating contest where both teams ran the ball well and showed good basic skills.

Steffan Jones and Josh Cann scored the Aberystwyth tries but with Tenby always that little quicker to secure possession they claimed three good tries by Rhys Barnes, Spencer Odley and Tyler Lewis as reward for their all-round play and Macsen Evans contributed a conversion and a penalty to round off a good game which was a credit to the age group.

Under 15s Final:

Aberystwyth U15s

Aberystwyth 6 - Crymych 3

There was no shortage of effort and total commitment to their respective causes in a match played at great pace but with defences coming out on top alongside the fact that mistakes were inevitable and defences came out on top to such an extent that neither side was able to score a single try, despite coming close.

In the end it came down to penalties and Steffan Jones kicked two for Aber and Dafydd Bryan was on target with one for Crymych.

But that is not to say that it wasn’t an exciting contest which the large crowd enjoyed – and there would have been some sore young bodies on Monday after the power of the tackling and the fact that no quarter was asked for or given!

Under 16s Final:

Hwest U16s

Pembroke 29 - Haverfordwest 31

What a sharp contrast there was in the final final of the day, where Haverfordwest squeezed home by two points against Pembroke in a game that produced an amazing 60 points, shared four tries apiece, and the only difference eventually being that The Young Blues landed one more conversion than their unlucky opponents.

County youth organiser Ken Davies was rightly enthused by the quality of this final, which reflects everything good about rugby at local level – and he praised the quality of the coaching that has seen these talented young players show such high skill levels alongside total dedication to their case.

The lead changed hands on several occasions and the result was in doubt until the last seconds as the points’ tally kept rising, with young referee Tom Carew also playing his part with his handling of play.

For Pembroke there were tries from Tobi Pratt, Lewis Dennison, and Owen Rickard (2), who caught the eye with his quality play, with Bowen Clarke converting three and adding a penalty as he played really well too.

The Young Blues grabbed good tries by Ashton Doyle, Max Fenn, Iori Curtis and Logun Young, all experienced youth players, and all four converted by Rio Phillips to go with a penalty, as his side celebrated success and one could only feel sympathy for Pembroke after they had played a real part in such a cracking contest that was a tribute to both clubs to round off a wonderful day in such style.
