The Pembrokeshire Junior Rugby Finals were a huge success as 12 teams vied for success in the age groups from under 11 to under 16 – and another eight played their games at under 7 to under 11 under the tag rules that are very much part of the ‘Pathway’ scheme where they are introduced gently to the game without any contact, limited contact after the initial two seasons and then becoming more physically involved as tackling and other aspects of play are introduced by qualified coaches in every club.
Play started at 10am and was still taking place as seven o’clock approached in front of packed crowds at Parc Lloyd Thomas, the home of Crymych RFC and impeccably organised by Andrew ‘Twts’ Thomas and his large squad of helpers in a range of roles that included feeding the players, changing facilities and showers, running the gate and parking, and a host of other jobs that ensured the day went like clockwork.
Small wonder then that County Youth organiser Ken Davies was full of praise for Crymych’s successful hosting of the day, as well as the wonderful rugby served up by so many players, coaches and clubs, plus the referees who gave of their time.
The day started out with the under 7s and under 8 games of tag rugby, where no contact is allowed other than removing an opponents’ tags placed on their shorts, with everyone having great fun in running after the ball like swarms of locusts but enjoying every second of it and showing their developing ability to catch the ball, give and take passes.
It is easy to see the development shown when the under 9s and 10s enter the arena because they are allowed one-on-one tackling but with no contact once the tackle is made in the first season and at under 10s are allowed to also win the ball on the ground, which is known as ‘jackling’ – and the improvement in positional play becomes ever-more evident alongside good handling and general play, but without an emphasis on getting results.
