Junior chess competition
Pembrokeshire Chess Club Juniors played a number of games against their counterparts from Fishguard recently, with the latter club hosting and organising it.
Fourteen Juniors enjoyed the game and had the opportunity to learn from the experience. It was pleasing to see the skills they have acquired being put into practice. Importantly the etiquette of chess was on display, with some great sportsmanship by both teams. Whilst everyone enjoys winning, it’s paramount to be a respected player which will see you in good stead throughout life and chess!
Everybody did well and enjoyed the occasion. Having said that Pembrokeshire wished to mention their captain Harry Harling, playing on Board One.; Harry had two tremendous results against a much older player graded 150 points approximately above him.
The Club is pleased to have ten new junior members join recently, bringing the total number up to 25. We split the group into two in order to tailor suitable learning for all. Hopefully Fishguard can come to HQ in Steynton shortly for those that missed out last night and give others an opportunity to play.
Our aim is to promote junior chess and as a club we were delighted to give young Henry Burton (Under 11) an opportunity which he is grasping to play Board One for our adult side.
What's next?
We are looking forward to travelling to White Knights, Llanelli in half term, on the 18
th February for a return fixture and will confirm numbers shortly – and thanks to Jason Garcia for organising it. There is also talk of playing the newly formed Haverfordwest Chess Club, with both Senior and Junior members so we can give everyone, experienced and newcomers, a game.
We would also like to congratulate our friends in Redhill High for taking three teams to the Welsh Secondary Schools Championship and competing with distinction. We look forward also to our game after half term with them.
