Griffiths strikes brilliant Bluebirds winner to stun Dragons at Jennar Park
Barry Town 1 – Haverfordwest County 2
Haverfordwest County manager Micky Ellis was understandably delighted that his team came away from Jennar Park with an excellent win over Barry Town.
The Bluebirds have already played Barry twice earlier in the season, both games home, drawing 2-2 in the league and losing 2-1 in extra time in the Welsh Cup.
“We played well today. We started with a 4-5-1 formation and this caused them problems. We were solid in defence but lively in attack,” said Ellis.
“After drawing with Corries at home last week it was vital that the boys got back on track and they certainly did that with a terrific display, but more importantly getting a win.”
The visitors broke the deadlock midway through the first period, when Richie Lewis struck with his right foot and that is rare as he his predominantly left-footed.
Harsh words
However, former Bluebirds boss Gavin Chesterfield, certainly used some harsh words to his Dragons squad at half time and they responded with an equaliser ten minutes after the interval. The visitors conceded a free kick just outside the box and Josh Lowe struck a firm drive past the wall and into the far corner.
Brilliant solo effort
Ellis brought on Nicky Woodrow from the bench to replace Anton Owens, and this substitution swung the match in the visitors’ favour as the Bluebirds reacted positively when Darren Griffiths scored a brilliant solo effort to secure the points in the 70th minute. The striker beat two defenders before coolly tucking the ball past the goalkeeper.
Next Saturday Haverfordwest County entertain Cwmbran Celtic at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium, kick off is at 2pm.

Sweet Elliott volley earned Bluebirds a late point against Corries
Haverfordwest County 2 – Cardiff Corries 2
Haverfordwest County came from behind twice to salvage a point at home against lowly-placed Cardiff Corries at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
This was a poor result as far as the Bluebirds’ camp was concerned, but they got a point when three could have easily been lost.
Dan Hooper gave the visitors the lead before Jay Brockway equalised from close range to level matters at half time.
The second half was a scrappy affair where the Bluebirds completely lost their way and shape as the visitors regained the lead when Andy Smith scored, but four minutes from the end Gareth Elliott equalised with a sweetly struck volley.
The visitors hit the post early doors when striker Hooper’s fierce shot was parried on to the woodwork by goalkeeper Martin Langdon, but the Bluebirds began to get on top territorially, and were unlucky not to take the lead when goalkeeper Craig Attard blocked Nicky Woodrow’s volley from just inside the box, after good work initially from Richie Lewis.
Goal against run of play
The visitors took the lead possibly against the run of play on 26 minutes. Bluebirds midfielder Richie Lewis was dispossessed in his own half and a slick counter-attack led to Corries Hooper racing clear and the left midfielder showed good composure to slid the ball past Langdon.
Frustration got the better of Woodrow when he received a yellow card in the 32nd minute after the striker tangled with Corries central defender Dean Powell.
The Bluebirds should have equalised in the 37th minute. Woodrow was through on goal and scuffed a shot that keeper Attard parried and Richie Lewis’ goal bound shot was cleared off the goal line by Corries defender Robbie James.
Five minutes before half time and the Bluebirds equalised. Woodrow unselfishly squared the ball to Jay Brockway who calmly slotted home from close range.
Shortly after the interval the Bluebirds were given a warning when Hooper flashed a firm shot inches wide of Langdon’s left hand post.
Lucky let off
The visitors were unlucky not to take the lead when they had a goal disallowed in the 66th minute. Keeper Langdon flapped at a ball from a corner, and defender Chris Ashley drove the ball into the back of the net. The linesman flagged and the referee after a brief discussion awarded a free-kick for the homesters. It was definitely a lucky let off!
But the visitors took the lead when Smith scored following a goalmouth scramble. The Bluebirds got out of jail when substitute Gareth Elliott scored with a sweetly struck volley four minutes from the end to salvage a point.

Bluebirds in seventh heaven after comfortable victory over Pontardawe
Haverfordwest County 7 - Pontardawe 0
The Bluebirds ran riot at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium, scoring seven goals without reply in an incident-packed clash against nine-man Pontardawe.
The visitors had two players sent off in the first period, and the Bluebirds lost goal scorer Richard Lewis who picked up a nasty ankle injury and had to be replaced.
Darren Griffiths grabbed a thoroughly deserved hat-trick alongside a brace from Nicky Woodroow and others from Richard Lewis and Anton Owens to secure precious points and boost their goal difference into the bargain.
Two sent off
The homesters opened the scoring in the 11th minute when wide-side midfielder Lewis cut in from the wing and buried a left foot shot in the bottom corner.
Lewis flashed another shot just inches past the post, before the visitors had Niall Thomas sent off following some fisticuffs. Just before the half hour the visitors had Kieron Howells also sent off following a second yellow card as he tried in vain to halt a Nicky Woodrow run through the middle.
From the resulting free kick Darren Griffiths curled the ball past the wall and found the bottom corner of Steve Reeve’s net.
Put to the sword
The Bluebirds deservedly led 2-0 at the break and the visitors were put to the sword in the second period as the homesters scored five further goals without reply.
Griffiths struck home the third and fourth to complete his hat-trick, then Griffiths’ strike partner Nicky Woodrow was on target with goals number five and six, the first a real cracker after a diagonal run to create the space.
Then six minutes from the final whistle the ball played ping-pong in the box before Anton Owens struck a low drive in the bottom corner to complete the rout.

Well-taken Griffiths brace earns Bluebirds deserved victory
Haverfordwest County 3 –
Cwmaman Institute 1
After last week’s set-back Haverfordwest County bounced back to winning ways with a comfortable three points over Cwmaman Institute at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
The overall performance by the Bluebirds was impressive, as they kept possession and used the ball wisely and created chances.
The Bluebirds led 2-1 at the break with goals from Nicky Woodrow and Darren Griffiths, but Jarrod Price converted a penalty. But shortly after the break Grifftihs added his second goal after he was set up by Anton Owens to secure the all-important points.
Woodrow breaks deadlock
The Bluebirds took the lead in the 16th minute when central midfielder Ricky Watts’ defence-splitting ball found striker Nicky Woodrow, the striker showed good composure to calmly slot the ball past Cwmaman goalkeeper Ryan Griffiths.
The homesters extended their lead in 36 minutes when Darren Griffiths who broke clear down the left wing cut inside and confidently lashed the ball home in the roof of the net.
Woodrow and Richard Lewis also missed further scoring opportunities and really both should have done better.
Right on the stroke of half time the visitors pulled a goal back when Nicky Woodrow brought down Nathan Prodger in the box for a definite penalty that former Bluebird Jarrod Price confidently despatched, sending Martin Langdon the wrong way.
Griffiths grabs crucial third goal
Micky Ellis’ team extended their lead shortly after the interval when a brilliant break down the right by Anton Owens led to the wide-sided midfielder unselfishly squaring the ball to Darren Griffiths to slot in the third goal, and his second of the match.
The latter end of the match became a bit scrappy and little bit of needle crept into the game as the Bluebirds deservedly held out for their seventh win of the season.

Poor Bluebirds fail miserably to beat
nine-man Taffs Well
Taffs Well 3 – Haverfordwest County 1
Haverfordwest County came away against Taffs Well feeling totally frustrated at losing after the home outfit had two players sent off in the second half.
County had the better of the first half, but found themselves a goal behind five minutes before half time when a mix-up at the back between defender Phil Cattlin and goalkeeper Craig Morris saw the ball embarrassingly end up in the net for an own goal.
Down to nine men
Five minutes after the interval and the homesters had Jason Dixon sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
The visitors equalised through Darren Griffiths after some sterling work from Nicky Woodrow created the goal scoring opportunity.
Taffs Well were then reduced to nine men when Darren Williams received a straight red card for a horrendous two-footed tackle on Owen Thomas, the latter receiving a nasty gash to his leg and so could not continue to play.
Late goals finish Bluebirds
The visitors were guilty of missing a host of goal scoring chances, but matters got a whole lot worse when late further goals from Nathan White and Tyrone Topper ensured Taffs Well completed the league double over the disappointing Bluebirds.
Haverfordwest County now have two successive home league matches at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium against Cwmaman Institute and Pontardawe Town. Both kick off at 2pm.

Griffiths strikes twice in Bluebirds’ welcome win over AFC Porth
Haverfordwest County 2 – AFC Porth 0
Darren Griffiths scored two late goals to earn Haverfordwest County a welcome victory over AFC Porth at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
This result was no more than the Bluebirds deserved against the Rhondda Valley outfit who were third in the table before kick off, whilst the Bluebirds sat ninth.
Lacked cutting edge
Micky Ellis and Wayne Jones’ outfit dominated territory and possession in the first period, but they lacked that cutting edge up front.
Ricky Watts, Richie Lewis and Darren Griffiths all missed chances as they had the visitors constantly on the backfoot.
Craig Morris only had one save to make in the opening 45, comfortably gathering a header by Stuart Brock. But Morris was given a scare just before the break when midfielder Brock’s audacious 45-yard lob sailed over his head and just went inches past the left hand post.
The Bluebirds piled on the pressure in the second half but still were struggling to score that elusive goal.
Nicky Woodrow had a close range effort miraculously stopped by Nigel Williams, despite the striker being flagged for offside.
Two late goals
Fifteen minutes from the end Darren Griffiths struck a curling effort from the edge of the area straight at goalkeeper Nigel Williams.
Finally the Bluebirds’ opened the scoring in the 80th minute. Substitute Jonathan Kift’s cross at the far post was met by a header across the box from Woodrow, it fell to Darren Griffiths, who turned in the box and hit his shot first time that squirmed underneath the body of Williams and literally crept into the net.
A minute later and the homesters went 2-0 ahead. Woodrow’s unselfish cross left a simple tap-in for Darren Griifths for his second goal of the match and seal the vital points. Griffiths had two late chances to complete a deserved hat-trick but one left-foot shot hit the post and the other flashed just wide.
Following the second goal, referee Adrian Wilson red carded an AFC Porth official from the dug out following an ugly incident.
Both teams had observed a minute’s silence in memory of former Bluebird Clifford Pawlett who sadly passed away just before Christmas.
Next Saturday, Haverfordwest County travel to Taffs Well in search of another victory.

Bluebirds and Bulldogs draw a blank
Haverfordwest County 0 – Ton Pentre 0
Haverfordwest County created the best scoring chances but had to settle for a goalless draw with Ton Pentre at the Conygar Bridge Meadow.
This result was the second draw in a row for the Bluebirds, as both sides played out a drab draw, with the Rhondda Bulldogs getting everyone behind the ball and clearly happy to try and hit the Bluebirds on the counter.
Chances missed
Jay Brockway came close to opening the scoring in the 19th minute. The tall 20 year old striker had one of his best games wearing a Bluebirds’ shirt, and he tried a cheeky over head kick after a neat build up that saw goalkeeper John Howe push the goal-bound strike wide at full stretch.
The best scoring opportunity fell to Gary Taylor after good off the ball running by Brockway, but the central midfielder miscued his shot from eight yards. Six minutes before half time and Richard Lewis’ edge of the box direct free kick was struck firmly left footed, but it was relatively easy for Howe to deal with underneath his crossbar.
There were impressive individual displays from Ricky Watts and Owen Thomas, the pair working tirelessly in vain as no Bluebirds’ goals were still forthcoming.
Poor clearance
After the break the Bluebirds went close again when Gareth Elliott’s powerful header from a corner flew over the crossbar. However, the visitors could have taken the lead a few minutes later as Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Craig Morris’ poor defensive clearance fell invitingly to striker Ross Fowler, who struck a low shot from 20 yards into the side netting.
Right at the end, Dale Griffiths rose highest in the box from a corner, but again, the header failed to hit the target and both sides settled for a point apiece.
“It was a frustrating afternoon,” said County manager Micky Ellis. “They came here to defend and try to hit us on the break. I’m disappointed we didn’t score but happy we didn’t lose and so got a point. We’ve taken four points off them – I would have taken that at the beginning of the season.”
Haverfordwest County travel to Cambrian & Clydach who are the current league leaders and Ellis is looking for another positive performance and result.
Haverfordwest County: Craig Morris; Phil Cattlin; Ricky Watts; Dale Griffiths; Gareth Elliott; Owen Thomas; Anton Owens; Gary Taylor; Richard Lewis; Jay Brockway; Darren Griffiths. Substitutes: Jonathan Kift; Jamie Evans; Declan John.

Late Evans header robs County of victory
Aberaman Athletic 2 –
Haverfordwest County 2
Former Bluebird Richard Evans scored an 88th minute equaliser to deny Haverfordwest County victory at Aberaman Athletic.
“I felt this was definitely two points lost instead of a point gained,” said bitterly disappointed Bluebirds’ coach Wayne Jones. “Had we held out – this result would have pushed us up the table, but we lost concentration and had to settle for a draw.”
Fastest goal of season
The visitors got off to a dream start when they scored the quickest goal of the season in no less than 17 seconds. Gary Taylor’s long directed free kick fell to striker Darren Griffiths who showed good composure to slot home from close range.
However, on 15 minutes Athletic equalised when Bluebirds’ defender Phil Cattlin struck the ball into his own net from six yards out.
Sweet strike
But on 22 minutes the visitors regained the lead with the best goal of the afternoon. Central midfielder Taylor unleashed a sweet 30-yard strike that flew into the bottom corner to give the visitors a slender 2-1 cushion at the break.
The Bluebirds failed to really get going in the second half and didn’t really create any further goal scoring opportunities.
But the final say was left to Evans who planted his header past Craig Morris to earn his new team mates a point when all looked lost.
The Bluebirds entertain Ton Pentre at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium on Saturday, December 10th, kick off is at 2.30pm.

Bluebirds gain welcome victory over high-flying Bridgend Town
Haverfordwest County 1 – Bridgend Town 0
A solitary goal on the hour mark from Richie Lewis secured welcome points for Haverfordwest County over high-flying Bridgend Town at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium on Friday evening.
With the departure of Leighton James earlier this week, this result was just the sort of tonic that coaches Mickey Ellis and Wayne Jones were looking for.
“We went back to basics, and collectively we played well,” confessed Ellis. “I think we deservedly won, but the biggest mystery was the fact that we should have scored a lot more. We dominated in midfield – but our finishing was the only disappointment on an otherwise good night.
“I was delighted to see a decent crowd, we need their support and I want the fans to really get behind us as we kick-on on for the rest of the season.”
The visitors are fourth in the table, and they struggled to cope with the Bluebirds in most departments. Darren Griffiths, brother of Dale, made his debut and looked threatening up front alongside co-striker Jamie Evans.
Top drawer saves
However, Darren Griffiths, Owen Thomas and Anton Owens all failed to hit the target in the first half, as the Town’s man of the match Marty Ellacott, the goalkeeper was in outstanding form, pulling off a string of top drawer saves.
The crucial goal was scored in the 60th minute. Wide sided midfielder Ritchie Lewis cut in from the left wing and struck low drive past the outstretched Ellacott, as the ball nestled in the far corner of the net. That goal was no more than what the Bluebirds deserved.
The visitors had four former Bluebirds amongst their ranks in the form of Terry Evans, Mark Dodds, Danny Thomas and Tom Ramasut, the latter just transferred from Barry Town.
The Bluebirds coped admirably with the visitors’ resurgence after the goal, with the Bluebirds’ man of the match Ricky Watts in outstanding form in the heart of midfield playing alongside Gary Taylor and Owen Thomas.
Haverfordwest County travel to Aberaman Athletic who lie third from bottom next Saturday, but every away trip has proved difficult this season, and this trip will also be tough, but the Bluebirds will be trying their best to take something from this clash.

Leighton James has amazingly quit Haverfordwest County
Leighton James has amazingly resigned as Director of Football with Haverfordwest County.
The former Wales international has walked out on the club that he only joined in the first week of October.
It’s an embarrassing situation for all concerned, it has not worked out and now the club is determined to move on and consolidate their position in Welsh League Division One.
“We tried to work with him, but he clearly didn’t want to work with us,” said club director David Hughes.
“His tenure was short and now we will resume with Mickey (Ellis) and Wayne (Jones) in charge for the rest of the season.”
The Bluebirds face high flying Bridgend on Friday, 25th November evening and despite James’ departure the club will strive to improve their indifferent form, in a league that has proved a tough baptism for the former Welsh Premier outfit.

Brazil’s Goytre team gains sweet victory over his former Bluebirds’ club
Goytre United 2 – Haverfordwest County 0
Goytre United scored two goals in the second half to seal a thoroughly deserved victory over Haverfordwest County at Glenhafod Park Stadium.
Despite a disappointing Welsh Cup defeat at home to Barry Town, the Bluebirds came into this league tussle having won two and drawn one in their last three games, but on this occasion they can have no complaints with the final result.
Obviously this fixture also had an added bit of spice, as Goytre United’s manager is none other than Derek Brazil, who was boss at Haverfordwest County for four years, plus former Bluebird Robbie Walters also plays up front for them.
Walters is spot on
Ironically, it was Walters who broke the deadlock on 60 minutes; the striker calmly stroked home a penalty, which was a fair reflection on the balance of play.
Richard Ryan should have equalised minutes later, but the striker took an extra touch in the box and the scoring opportunity was gone.
Goytre doubled their lead in the 70th minute; some poor defending saw Robert French bury his low effort from just inside the 18-yard box.
The homesters were reduced to ten-men when Emyr Williams was sent off for what was termed by the referee as “destroying a goal scoring opportunity.” But Brazil was quick to point out that: “he took one for the team”.
Following the sending off incident Bluebirds’ manager Leighton James was also sent off which just really summed up the visitors’ dreadful afternoon.
Unbeaten run
Goytre boss Brazil is delighted that his team has now gone eight matches unbeaten since he took charge at the helm.
On Friday, 25th November Haverfordwest County face a stern test against Bridgend Town at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium, kick off is at 7pm. Go along and give the Bluebirds your support!

Welsh Cup Round Two
Bell sounds victory for Barry Town with extra time cracker!
Haverfordwest County 1 – Barry Town 2
(After extra time)
Josh Bell struck a stunning winner for Barry Town in the 118th minute to cruelly dump Haverfordwest County out of the Welsh Cup at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
Just as the tie was destined for penalties, up popped substitute Bell to strike a vicious 20-yard right footed drive from an indirect free kick that flew in the top corner to break the Bluebirds’ players and supporters’ hearts.
It was probably no more than Gavin Chesterfield’s team deserved, but it was cruel luck on Leighton James’ tiring outfit because they had their chances to put the game to bed.
Goal of season
The cup-tie had started brightly for the home side when Richard Lewis struck possibly the goal of the season on 11 minutes.
The left sided midfielder struck a sweet volley that hit the back of the net in the blink of an eye. The Bluebirds had other half chances but it was Barry who always looked threatening as Anthony Nagi and Nicky Jones squandered chances or forced saves from Craig Morris - but the Bluebirds still led 1-0 at half time.
In the second half the visitors got on top and were unlucky not to equalise as Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Craig Morris pulled off a superb save to deny Jones.
Jay Brockway should have increased the homesters’ lead, but with the goal at his mercy after an Anton Owens’ shot had been blocked, the 20 year old striker drilled a close range shot straight at the defender and this terrible miss came back to haunt County.
Poor defending
Former Bluebird Tom Ramasut came off the bench to play an influential role for Barry Town, and then virtually on the final whistle, the visitors equalised when another former Bluebird, Atif Bashir, who has since represented Pakistan scored, following poor defending from James’ outfit.
So the tie was forced into extra time and although the Bluebirds battled hard the crucial goal was scored by Bell in the second period of extra time to settle this cup affair.

Bluebirds surrender lead twice to claim a draw with Barry Town
Haverfordwest County 2 – Barry Town 2
Haverfordwest County twice surrendered the lead and had to be content with a draw against Barry Town at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
The Bluebirds started brightly enough and were rewarded by taking an early lead in the 11th minute as in-form striker Jonathan Kift finished clinically from inside the visitors’ box. But on 29 minutes, man of the match Anthony Nagi, who created havoc all afternoon, scored with a well-taken effort to level matters going in at half time.
Former Bluebirds return
Former Bluebird boss Gavin Chesterfield managed the visitors and in his ranks he had a number of former Bridge Meadow favourites such as Damon Searle, Tom Ramasut, Atif Bashir and substitute Mike Hartley.
Looked menacing
The homesters looked the more menacing after the break and deservedly went ahead for the second time in the 60th minute, as skipper Gary Taylor scored with an exquisite strike from the edge of the 18-yard box.
But 14 minutes from full time the visitors once again squared matters. The electric pace of Hagi saw the striker cut inside from the left wing and firmly slotted the ball in the far corner. Minutes earlier and Barry goalkeeper Dan Bradley denied Nicky Woodrow adding a third with a superb reaction save from his close range header.
Both teams meet again next week in a Welsh Cup tie at the same venue.

Bluebirds’ pick-up first back-to-back wins in two seasons
Cardiff Corinthians 0 – Haverfordwest County 2
Haverfordwest County overcame bottom of the table Cardiff Corinthians to pick up their first back-to-back wins for two seasons.
Last week Leighton James’ outfit beat champions Bryntirion, and this week, they gained three more precious points by winning in the capital. Goals by Jonathan Kift and Nicky Woodrow secured the visitors’ fourth win of a difficult campaign.
Dream start
The visitors got off to a dream start when they opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Woodrow controlled to set-up co-striker Kift, the recently signed striker making no mistake at the near post.
The visitors played with a 3-5-2 formation with an impressive defensive display from Phil Cattlin alongside Gareth Elliott and Dale Griffiths, in a three-man rear guard.
Haverfordwest County goalkeeper Craig Morris pulled off a stunning save from a direct free-kick in the first half to keep the Corries at bay.
On the hour mark the visitors doubled their lead. Kift this time set-up Woodrow, the striker hitting low shot in the far corner to ease his side’s nerves.
Pulling the strings
Vastly experienced Andrew Mumford pulled the strings in the heart of midfield, plus Ricky Watts and Richard Lewis, both made an impressive return to the starting line-up. Substitutes Jay Brockway, Anton Owens and Alex Squires all made useful contributions when they came on. Late in the game Woodrow was unlucky not to add a third, after he was set-up by unselfish Brockway, his low-drilled drive cannoned off the post – but overall the Bluebirds will be pleased to maintain their winning ways.
The Bluebirds will be gunning for their third league win on the trot when they face Barry Town at the Conygar Bridge Meadow this Saturday, 29th October, and kick-off is at 2.30pm. The following Saturday, 5th November they have a home tie in the Welsh Cup also against Barry Town.

Woodrow scores late winner as Bluebirds gain sweet revenge
Haverfordwest County 2 –
Bryntirion Athletic 1
Super substitute Nicky Woodrow struck a late winner to earn Haverfordwest County victory over ten-man Bryntirion Athletic at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
Last week the visitors defeated the Bluebirds 1-0 to knock them out of the League Cup, but this week, Leighton James’ Bluebirds came back from a one-goal deficit to clinch three precious points in an entertaining tussle.
Good value for interval lead
The visitors were good value for their 1-0 lead at half time. The goal came in the 31st minute when Ricky Hodges finished clinically inside the box.
Earlier, Anthony Rawlings had a low shot well saved by Craig Morris whilst centre half Rhys Llewellyn saw a firm header cleared off the line by David Evans as the visitors dominated.
Rawlings actually got the ball in the back of the net, but the striker was ruled offside - a let off for the homesters.
But the Bluebirds defence finally cracked just a minute later as Hodges grabbed the only goal of the first period with a neat finish.
Whatever Leighton James said at the interval it worked since five minutes after the break the Bluebirds squared matters. Striker Dale Evans’ low drive came off the foot of the post, he followed up and was up ended by goalkeeper Peter Blain. The referee issued a yellow card to the former Bluebird when he could have easily been red carded. Bluebirds’ skipper Gary Taylor took responsibility and struck his unstoppable spot-kick in the right hand corner of the roof of the net.
Red card for Prangley
This goal inspired the homesters and they now had the visitors constantly on the back foot. Jamie Evans fired a fierce shot over the crossbar. Then a defining moment came midway through the second-half when Simon Prangley was red carded for petulantly kicking Gareth Elliott.
The homesters took full advantage of the extra-man and Woodrow had a low shot saved by Blain. But right at the death Woodrow latched on to a perfect pass by debutant Andrew Mumford to score and get the Bluebirds back on the winning track.

Bluebirds pay agonising penalty at Bryntirion Athletic
Bryntirion Athletic 1 – Haverfordwest County 0
Haverfordwest County were unlucky to slip to a disappointing one-goal cup defeat at the hands of Bryntirion Athletic.
The homesters got the winner from the penalty spot in the second half, scored by their ace striker Anthony Rawlins after substitute Wayne Jones handled the ball in the area.
The visitors had the lion’s share of possession and territory but they lacked that vital finishing touch in the final third.
Bluebirds’ boss Leighton James will surely be targeting revenge next Saturday (15th October) , when they face the same opponents at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium in a Division One encounter.
Owen Thomas impressed on his debut for the Blues, the wide-sided midfielder has signed from Newcastle Emlyn. Also the Bluebirds have signed striker Jonathan Kift from Ton Pentre and a central defender from Garden Village.

Welsh Cup – Round 1
Leighton James kick starts his tenure with a welcome cup victory
UWIC 0 – Haverfordwest County 2
Haverfordwest County progressed to the next round with a comfortable two-goal win in Cardiff against UWIC.
Leighton James took over the reigns earlier this week as Director of Football at Haverfordwest County, and he could not have wished for a better start to his tenure. Not only did his side win but also more importantly kept a clean sheet.
Goal in each half
The visitors grabbed a goal in each half to secure cup success against the students who included a former Bluebird Kristian Speake playing in their defence.
Gary Taylor opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. The central midfielder unleashed a 25-yard screamer to give his team some breathing space at the interval.
The visitors controlled possession in the second period. Alex Squires stood out playing in a holding midfield role and Phil Cattlin was immaculate playing in the heart of defence at sweeper. Striker Jay Brockway worked tirelessly up front without reward for the visitors.
The Bluebirds put the cup-tie to bed in the 85th minute when Anton Owens scored a brilliant solo effort.
Next Saturday the Bluebirds travel to Bryntirion in the League Cup first round and then host the same opponents the following week in a Welsh League Division One encounter at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

Bluebirds humiliated at Cwmaman Institute
Cwmaman Institute 2 –Haverfordwest Count 1
Haverfordwest County’s woeful start to the season continued with another depressing defeat at the hands of Cwmaman Institute.
The Bluebirds slipped to their fourth defeat in eight starts and manager Micky Ellis and assistant Wayne Jones know that their side should be performing far batter than they currently are showing.
The homesters led 1-0 at half time, thanks to Nathan Prodge slotting the ball past Bluebirds’ Craig Morris, the goalkeeper preferred to last week’s man of the match Martin Langdon.
Matters got worse in the second period when former Bluebird Jarrod Price added his side’s second goal in the 65th minute with a direct free kick.
The visitors pulled a late goal back through Nicky Woodrow, but it was definitely a classic case of too little too late.
Speaking to Pembrokeshiresport.co.uk “I’m absolutely gutted with this defeat,” said Ellis. “They were compact at the back, we just could not break them down.”

Ten-man Bluebirds suffer terrible home defeat at hands of Taffs Well
Haverfordwest County 3 – Taffs Well 4
Haverfordwest County suffered an agonising defeat at the hands of Taffs Well at the Conygar Stadium.
The home side were down to ten men and failed to claim at least a point when they found themselves behind all afternoon.
It was a frustrating afternoon for the home side, but on the overall balance of play the visitors thoroughly deserved their three points. Despite conceding four goals Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Martin Langdon played well and wasn’t to blame for any the goals he conceded.
Fully punished
The visitors took an early lead when Bluebirds’ defender Dale Griffiths got dispossessed in his own box, and were fully punished when striker Nathan White drilled home hard and low from 12 yards. Two minutes later the Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Martin Langdon blocked a shot on target by Adnan Hiroli.
The lead was short-lived when the homesters squared matters in the ninth minute. A quickly-taken short corner led to Richie Lewis cracking a left foot drive from an acute angle that beat Rory McReesh at his near post.
The home side struggled to keep possession, and manager Mickey Ellis didn’t look happy with his team alongside assistant Wayne Jones.
The visitors had the better of the scoring chances in the first period, strikers White and Hiroli all firing shots wide of the target. They were rewarded for their perseverance when O’Sullivan lost the ball and Hiroli set up midfielder Joe Evans to tuck the ball in the far right hand corner to give the visitors a 2-1 cushion at half time.
Five minutes after the interval and visitors increased their lead. Man of the match White cut inside and struck a superb right foot shot from the edge of box in the bottom corner. It was no more than the Taffs Well deserved.
The home side pulled a goal back just two minutes later to keep them in contention. Jamie Evans rising highest in the box to plant a firm header home from a corner taken by Gary Taylor.
Cattlin sent off
But once again the visitors extended their lead when Adnan Hiroli was given far too much space in the box and drilled in from close range.
The homesters’ cause was not helped when substitute Phil Cattlin was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. The first was for not informing the linesman he had replaced Gareth Elliott and when the fourth goal was scored for back chatting to the referee!
Nicky Woodrow bagged the Bluebirds’ third goal two minutes later. The striker lurked with intent inside the area to give his team a glimmer of hope. Goalkeeper McReesh pulled off a stunning save to deny O’Sullivan levelling matters. Woodrow also had a chance to equalise but the striker hurriedly lobbed wide from 30 yards.
Before the match both teams observed a minute’s silence for the four miners’ who lost their lives in the Gleision Colliery disaster.
Haverfordwest County’s next league match is at Cwmaman Institute next Saturday, 24th September.

League Cup
Gary’s wonder strike ensures safe passage into the next round
Haverfordwest County 5 - Croesyceiliog 3
Haverfordwest County have progressed to the next round of the League Cup after a nervous 5-3 victory over the Welsh League Second Division outfit Croesyceilog at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
The home side led 4-1 at the interval and looked to be cruising, but two successive second half penalties by former Bluebird striker Jody Jenkins who made it 4-3 with only five minutes left on the clock put the visitors right back in the tie.
35-yard screamer
But Bluebirds’ manager Mickey Ellis’ team put the tie beyond the visitors when central midfielder Gary Taylor scored a late fifth with a superb 35-yard screamer that flew in the top corner. The wonder strike goal was a created by some excellent work by right back Ricky Watts who won a tackle and teed-up the gritty midfielder.
The homesters opened their goal scoring account in the 11th minute when right-sided midfielder Richie Lewis scored with a fierce left-foot drive.
Then home striker Jamie Evans scored goals in the 19th and 24th minutes to put his side 3-0 ahead. His first was a wicked strike from inside the box that scorched into the roof of the net. Evans’ second saw the striker shrug of central defender Nyran Bird and showed cool composure to round keeper Jon Chorley and neatly tucked the ball home.
Unlucky break
In the 30th minute the Bluebirds lost the services of Ross Jones who came off worst in a 50/50 challenge where the striker was transported to hospital where the early news was a possible break to his right leg, Alex Squires replaced Jones.
Within a minute of the incident to Jones the visitors pulled a goal back through striker Owen Gooenough, the lanky striker sliding home from a clever Jody Jenkins through ball.
Then on the stroke of half time the visitors took a 4-1 lead. Skipper Chris O’Sullivan racing clear and burying his effort underneath the goalkeeper.
Good news for the Bluebirds’ fans was the return to action of quality striker Nick Woodrow in the second period; he was unlucky not to get on score sheet when his curling right foot shot struck the far post.
Midway through the second period and visitors struck twice from the spot through Jenkins, but the Bluebirds put the tie safe late on when Gary Taylor’s wonder strike completed the scoring.
Next Saturday, 17th September Haverfordwest County return to league duty where they face Taffs Well at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

Bluebirds lose again as going gets tough!
AFC Porth 1 - Haverfordwest County 0
Haverfordwest County slipped to disappointing narrow defeat at the hands of AFC Porth on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors shipped an early goal and never recovered from that early set back, and to make matters worse they had Anton Owens sent off in the 51st minute after he received a second yellow card following a reckless challenge.
The Bluebirds have slipped down to ninth in the table after just six games into the campaign. Their record does not make impressive reading as they have now won two, lost three and drawn one.
The Rhondda Valley outfit took the lead in the eighth minute. Defender Alan Thomas rose highest at a corner to score the only goal of the game.
Confidence is low
Bluebirds’ manager Mickey Ellis was bitterly disappointed with the final outcome and he can’t wait for his strike force of Nicky Woodrow and Richard Ryan to quickly return from injury.
“We were poor,” said Ellis. “It was a really flat performance and confidence in the squad is low. The players need to show more desire on the pitch and trust in their ability because they are definitely good enough to beat teams at this level.”
This Saturday, 10th September, Haverfordwest County have a home League Cup tie against Croesyceiliog. Kick off is at 2.30pm and the following week they return to league action where Taffs Well are the visitors to the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

Bertorelli brace secures easy victory for league leaders over poor Haverfordwest County
Haverfordwest County 1
Clydach & Cambrian 3
A brilliant brace from Jason Bertorelli deservedly earned league leaders Clydach & Cambrian a 3-1 victory over poor-looking Haverfordwest County outfit at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
This result has given the Bluebirds camp a reality check that life in this division is not going to be easy. It’s not all gloom and doom, but judging by the visitors’ excellent performance they are going to have to up their game if they have any thoughts of returning straight back to the Welsh Premier.
The Bluebirds were guilty of squandering some early goal scoring opportunities. Simon Gilderdale missed with a close range header and Jamie Evans and Richie Ryan also cracked shots flying past the target.
One goal cushion
The league leaders woke from their slumber and began to pressurise the Bluebirds’ defence and were rewarded with a goal in the 19th minute.
Ceri Morgan’s cross from the right was met with a firm header in the box by striker Jason Bertorelli and brilliantly created the goal.
The visitors deservedly led 1-0 at half time and Bluebirds boss Micky Ellis would have said some harsh words to his under performing team.
The Bluebirds equalised in the 54th minute. Chris O’Sullivan was brought down outside the box and subsequently fired a right-footed direct free kick that took a deflection to wrong foot Jarrad Howells.
Draw was short lived
However, the lead was short lived when striker Mike Jones drove a home from 12 yards in the far corner after receiving a cross by right back Rod Latchford.
The visitors could have extended their lead when Dave Williams struck a right foot volley inside the box wide after being teed up by Bertorelli. Jones should have captilised on an error by Dale Evans, but the lanky striker dragged his shot wide.
The visitors put the final nail in the Bluebirds’ coffin when man of the match Bertorelli broke on the counter attack and lifted the ball over Craig Jones for the decisive third goal.
Next Saturday Haverfordwest County travel to AFC Porth and will be looking to bounce back to winning ways.

Lewis equaliser sees Bluebirds make their point!
Haverfordwest County 1 West End 1
Richard Lewis struck a timely second half equaliser to earn Haverfordwest County a draw with West End at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium on Wednesday evening.
West End thrashed the Bluebirds 5-1 last week, but this week they were given a hard fought game where either side could have nicked the points.
The Bluebirds should have taken the lead within a minute when right sided midfielder Ricky Watts was through on goal, but he was thwarted by goalkeeper Johnny Martin who blocked his low shot.
Scored against run of play
The visitors took the lead in the 15th minute definitely against the run of play. The Bluebirds gave away possession and it proved costly when West End striker Alex Chsysanthou broke clean through the middle of the park totally unmarked, and coolly slotted the ball past Bluebirds goalkeeper Craig Morris.
The goal inspired the visitors as they comfortably held on to a one-goal cushion at half time.
Ten minutes after the break and visitors should have extended their lead when Jamie Hopkins skied a ball over the crossbar from inside the box. It was a real let off!
Lewis cracks home equaliser
On the hour mark and the Bluebirds squared matters. West End keeper Martin parried the ball only for Richard Lewis to react quickest in the box and fire the ball crisply into the back of the net.
Chris O’Sullivan came close to adding a second goal when his low left foot drive struck the side netting.
Both sides created chances to score but on the night a draw was probably the right result.
Haverfordwest County host Cambrian & Clydach this Saturday, 27th August, and kick off is at 2.30pm.

Bluebirds bag big win as Ton lose two men
Ton Pentre 1 Haverfordwest County 2
Haverfordwest County bounced back in real style as they followed their heavy midweek defeat with an excellent victory over a Ton Pentre side which had won its two other matches and look likely to be one of the favourites for the title.
The Bluebirds scored the only goal of the first period, allowed the homesters back in soon after the restart and then scored the vital third goal of the match after the self-styled Bulldogs had been reduced to nine men.
Harsh lessons learned
Haverfordwest County certainly showed that they had learned some harsh lessons at West End in midweek because they started on a much better footing as their back four of David Evans, Simon Gilderdale, skipper Gareth Elliott and Kristian Griffiths made sure that there were no early mistakes – and keeper Craig Morris also made sure that there were no errors to give the home side a boost.
Phil Catlin tackled well in midfield alongside Chris O’Sullivan and Richard Lewis so that the Bluebirds more than held their own so that front runners Alex Galdo, Anton Owen and Richard Ryan could pose a threat to the Ton Pentre defence.
There was no scoring after 40 minutes but then Haverfordwest took the lead with a goal from Owen after some good play on the right flank allowed him to just beat the cover defence to the vital touch past Jon Howe in the home goal that saw the ball find the net.
Good start for Bulldogs but indiscipline costs them dear.
But the Bulldogs clawed their way back level within two minutes of the restart after they created enough space for Leon Young to beat Craig Morris and level matters.
Things started to go wrong for the Bulldogs after 71 minutes, however, as Josh Evans was sent off for a crude tackle from behind and team-mate Jason Cowan followed three minutes later for his second yellow card. Haverfordwest regained the lead shortly afterwards as Richard Ryan popped up in a goalmouth scramble to plant the ball in the net, via the crossbar.
The Bluebirds used all three subs late on, with Lee Hudgell making a welcome return to action in the final ten minutes after a lengthy lay-off – and both Micky Ellis and Wayne Jones must be delighted to have seen their players bounce back in such a positive manner.

Brilliant Bluebirds make a cracking start
Haverfordwest County 4
Aberaman Athletic 0
Referee: David Beckett
Assistants: Viv Nedin & Geoff Pridmore
Man of the Match: Ricky Watts
Haverfordwest made a slightly nervous start to their new campaign in the McWhirter Welsh League but soon stamped their ball skills and fitness levels to such an extent that on visiting Aberaman Athletic that they were a goal ahead at the break and worthy 4-0 winners.
Making a swift return to the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium was former Bluebird Lee Jarman and the experienced defender moved up to threaten at an early corner before Garry Taylor had a shot blocked for Haverfordwest.
Jarman again showed what an aerial threat he poses as he forced a superb save out of home keeper Craig Morris from a corner but a good build up by the Bluebirds saw Richard Lewis skin Jarman on the left but Anton Owens was unable to reach his drilled cross.
Ricky Watts fired well over the top as the Bluebirds began to exert an influence and after 33 minutes they took the lead with a cracking goal.
Chris O’Sullivan, looking sharp at the heart of midfield, joined forces with Richard Lewis before an excellent far-post cross by Richard Ryan allowed Nicky Woodrow to score with a beautiful header, despite Ben Banks brave effort to save the ball in the top corner.
O’Sullivan also had a long-range drive saved by Banks just before Jarman was yellow-carded before Richard Lewis also had a shot saved so that Haverfordwest County were worthy 1-0 leaders at the interval as Gareth Elliott covered well at the back alongside Ricky Watts, Simon Gilderdale and David Evans.
Haverfordwest started the second half with a bang as Richard Lewis and Woodrow (twice) forced reflex saves from Banks – but they deservedly doubled their lead after 52 minutes when Richard Ryan superbly curled his shot past a for-once stranded Banks.
They soon added a third when referee David Beckett spotted a push in the box and Chris O’Sullivan coolly sent Banks the wrong from the resulting spot-kick after 57 minutes.
Woodrow rattled the cross bar after 64 minutes and Richard Lewis curled a ball just wide of the far post before Gareth Davis fired wide of the far post for Aberaman.
Garry Taylor and Richard Ryan both forced good saves from Banks before the Bluebirds rounded the game off in real style as subs Gethin Roberts and Alex Galdo combined for the goal of the game, with Galdo getting a brilliant first touch on Roberts’ cross to round Banks and score.
There was still time for O’Sullivan to rap the bar but it mattered little because this was a very convincing start for the Bluebirds that will have delighted Micky Ellis and Wayne Jones - and sound a clarion call to other clubs in the section!

But Goytre finally grabbed the lead when Haverfordwest failed to clear a Paul Jones’ corner and when the ball was pushed back in Ryan fired home with a low left foot drive. The visitors might have had a second as Stein and Ryan found spaces but they were unable to turn pressure into more goals.
A superb reflex save by Peter Blain kept out a Stein shot to keep the Bluebirds in contention before subs Anton Owens and Jamie Evans came on and exerted a late influence, with Owens as supplier and Evans finishing things off with a low shot. There was still time for Gareth Elliott to win an aerial duel but Woodrow volleyed the ball over the bar and Owens had a shot saved in a frantic finish where referee Garwyn Davies also turned down another appeal for a penalty.
