Young Seagulls' trio doing well with Scarlets' West
Fishguard and Goodwick Rugby Club are delighted that this season they have three of their talented teenagers in the Scarlets (West) squad that has only just completed the first part of their season with an exciting win over their counterparts from North Wales in RGC at St Clears.
Rhys Lewis, Osian Rowe and Jack Delaney are the young Seagulls involved, with the first two playing at second row and Jack playing in the back row at this age level despite playing up a year and still available for next campaign.
Great family support
To make the squad demands not only high skill levels and commitment from the boys but also total support from parents because of the travel involved, with twice-weekly training sessions and regular matches against other regionals before they join together with Scarlets (East) after Christmas to hopefully be chosen for the full Scarlets' squad.
Perhaps that is why all three players are full of praise for their families’ support, especially Sonia and Peter Delaney, Bethan and Gavin Robb, plus Jason Lewis, Steve and Kelly Rowe.
Success with Fishguard and at county level
The talented trio has been with Fishguard and Goodwick since they started out at under seven level, with Osian and Rhys playing for the team coached by Osian's dad Steve which has won their age group on the county Finals Day, whilst Jack is a member of Colin Hancock's squad one year down, but having been good enough to join the other two in both cup finals. Osian scored the opening try last year against a stunned Cardigan team, with Rhys adding two more as a later bonus.
Outside of the Scarlets' involvement, all three have played for the county, with Chris Shousha doubling up as the rugby hub officer at Ysgol Bro Gwaun as well as coaching the two older boys in the second row, whilst Jack also played a year up there as proof of his maturity and good skill levels as a flanker. They all played for Pembrokeshire in last season's Dewar Shield national competition and from there joined other players from clubs across this county, and parts of Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire.
Great times at Hartbury College and Ystrad Mynach
All three players played in a festival at Hartbury College as well as two other matches at the superb facility at Ystrad Mynach; where overall they took on Scarlets (East), Gloucester and other half-regions like Blues (North), Ospreys (East) and Dragons (Black),
They really enjoyed the superb facilities at both venues and played at the Brewery Field in Bridgend before their last match against RGC, the North Walians at St Clears, where they won narrowly in a cracking contest, all under the leadership of head coach Tim Poole.
Easing off a little until the New Year
So now there is a little break in this high level of intensity where they will be expected to attend weekly weight training sessions at the SAW Gym in Haverfordwest and another at Parc y Scarlets. They will also be able to turn out for their club in under 16 matches as long as they restrict their playing to once a week.
There is no doubt that all three fully deserved their recognition and we wish them luck when they try for selection for the full Scarlets’ under 16 team in the New Year!
