Haverfordwest Academy Under 12’s booked their place in the FAW Academy Under 12’s Final by beating a very good Cambrian and Clydach side with literally the last kick of the game in normal time.
In the dying moments of normal time, just when it looked like extra time would have to be played, Haverfordwest had a corner which was met by Cameron Thomas, who scored the breath-taking winner.
Game of two halves
The semi final was played at Ammanford FC and really was a game of two halves because Haverfordwest looked sluggish at times and two lapses of concentration allowed Cambrian and Clydach to go 2-0 up by half time. Haverfordwest did make chances in the first half, but they couldn’t find the back of the net.
The second half saw Haverfordwest showing more passion and commitment and it wasn’t long before Ben Fawcett pulled a goal back. The Young Bluebirds now had plenty of ball and were pressing all the time. Jay Power scored a fantastic free kick to equalise and for a while the game was evenly poised as Haverfordwest had to defend strongly and captain Jake Houston headed away a Cambrian free kick that looked goal bound.
Dramatic late strike earns Newton finale
Then came that dramatic late strike from Thomas and there was just enough time for the opposition to kick off before the referee blew for full time, much to the delight of the Haverfordwest players and supporters.
Haverfordwest Academy will now meet Gap Conah’s Quay on FAW Finals Day at Newtown FC on Sunday 5th May 2013. The game will be filmed by ‘Sgorio’ and the highlights will be shown on Monday 6th May.
The boys hope to emulate last year’s Haverfordwest Academy under 12’s who won at Newtown. This is the third time in four years that Haverfordwest Academy Under 12’s have reached the finals – which is a great advert for Pembrokeshire football.
