Haverfordwest County’s youth team reserved their worst performance of the season for a Llwydcoed team that had yet to win a match but was able to travel back to the Aberdare area with all three points after central defender Killian Keyston fired home a late penalty.

It came about from an error which summed up the young Bluebirds’ lacklustre display because there seemed little danger as they had possession near their own penalty area and a needless square ball sent by a central defender put his colleagues under so much pressure that referee Neil Lewis, who had a good game, hadYoung Bluebirds disappoint at the Conygar Bridge Meadow no option but to point to the spot.

Soft goals and missed chances galore

The first two Llwydcoed goals also came from defensive errors and although the Bluebirds managed to twice recover from behind they missed a shed full of chances that they would normally bury with aplomb as the pace out wide of Martin Carroll and Laurie Haworth always posed a real threat.

Michael Davies gave Llwydcoed the early lead with a mishit shot but his keeper Ben Richards made a string of saves that made him candidate for man of the match before the Bluebirds levelled with an own goal from Callum Watts after Richards had blocked Liam Davies and Haworth in a goalmouth melee.

Bluebirds better but more errors

The second half was the same as Haverfordwest County looked the better side but a defensive error allowed Nathan Jenkins to put Llwydcoed back in front – and they could have added more as Connor Davies and Jenkins had good chances.

James Trueman came on to haul the Bluebirds back level but home keeper Dan Evans was forced to make two point blank saves to deny Llwydcoed. Haverfordwest also had several chances but poor finishing and Richards’ intervention kept them at bay – and Keyston’s penalty finally sealed victory for the visitors.

Home coaches Steve Batty and Colin Fawcett were less than impressed by their young charges, who know they will have to play far better next Tuesday (19th) as they entertain high flying Cardiff City in the Welsh Youth Cup.
