Star of the monthBen starts us off in real style!

This week sees us launch our ‘Star of the Month’ awards as another small thank you to the sporting people in our county who make an effort to fly the Pembrokeshire Flag in style, show prowess in sport or influence others by their actions in one way or another.

We are delighted, and honoured, to have Ben Field as our first award winner in December 2016 because he can say that he answers all three of the above criteria!

Helping to lead The Town in cricket

Ben is arguably one of the most popular and respected cricketers in our county as a classy batsman with Haverfordwest Cricket Club, where he was vice-captain to Danny Potter when The Town won the coveted double of championship and Harrison-Allen Bowl – and was heavily involved when their indoor league season when they won the Pembrokeshire and Welsh titles – and came mightily close to being British champs too. He is is sure to play an important role when the new season gets under way in Pembrokeshire.

Also a Wizard in football – and a manger of a key Pembrokeshire sporting team

Ben was also a more than useful footballer with Merlins Bridge and helped coach the Wizards to success as an added bonus.

But it is in his role as manager of Sport Pembrokeshire that perhaps Ben is best known because he leads a team that is totally committed to helping develop as many sports in the county alongside new interests that will draw in people of all ages to take up a leisure activity that will help their fitness.

Sport Awards are a guiding light in our county

This is never more in evidence than in the recent tenth holding of the Sport Pembrokeshire awards evening, where over 650 people flock to the wonderful Folly Farm Theatre to celebrate all that is good in terms of sport in our county.

Ben leads a dedicated team in his inimitable under-stated way throughout the whole process from pre-event meetings, advertising, working with sponsors and making sure that this special celebration, which is now hugely regarded by guests from ‘up the line’ who come to represent national organisations in sport, runs like clockwork.

We were delighted to meet up with Ben Field to surprise this modest sportsman with his ‘Star of the Month’ award and hope it tells him a little of the respect in which he is held across sport in Pembrokeshire!
