Saturday's WRU National League forecasts by Bruce Evans
Bruce Evans’ Rugby Preview
27th April 2013
In my opinion, five Pembrokeshire sides are already down; Whitland, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven, Neyland, and St Davids, and four of them from the north side of the Cleddau!
It’s a very different scenario from the end of last season when Milford and Haverfordwest were promoted.
But the most significant relegation is that of St Davids – how can you expect boys who play for fun to travel an hour and a half for every away game? In my opinion you should take the District H teams in divisions four and five and put them in a District H league.
The only bright points are the form of Crymych in Division Two, and Fishguard and Goodwick’s Swalec Bowl run.
Championship Division:
Narberth v Ebbw Vale
A disappointing defeat for Narberth last week at Pontypool and I can’t see them getting anything out of this match, despite home advantage versus top of the table Ebbw. So I go for an away win.
Whitland v Bargoed
Bargoed occupy second spot in the table and after some good recent peformances Whitland’s progress ground to a halt last week. I think it will be another defeat for the Borderers on Saturday.
Division Two (West):
Crymych v Seven Sisters
What a second half to the season. Slowly but surely Crymych have climbed the table and a win over Seven Sisters would see them steal the visitors’ second place, and I expect them to do it.
Maesteg v Haverfordwest
Haverfordwest’s brief resurgence has come to an end and it will be Division Three again next season; a pity because they were capable of playing in this division. This will be another away defeat for the Blues.
Division Three (West):
Cardigan v Milford Haven
Whether more boys will be available for Cardigan I don’t know. Rugby is a team sport and team mates have let each other down at the Mariners. They will lose this match and be relegated, which is a pity because like H’west, they were capable of playing this level of rugby.
Pontarddulais v Tenby United
A tough one, this, for Tenby. Last week was a good win, but promotion is no longer possible, and Pontarddulais are no push overs at home. I’m going for a home win, but hoping the Tenby boys prove me wrong.
Division Four (West):
Burry Port v Neyland
Neyland did really well last Saturday for the second time in a month! A great away win at Aberaeron and I think they’ll follow that up with a win against fellow relegation candidates, Burry Port. But it’s all too little too late, unfortunately, with Betws too far ahead to be caught.
Nantgaredig v Fishguard and Goodwick
This is another tough away match for Fishguard who must keep their league focus intact. Nant are only two places below and I think it will be a home win, especially if the Seagulls continue to rest players.
Division Five (West):
Gowerton v Pembroke
Gowerton are champions after winning at Pembroke last week. I don’t envy Pembroke having to travel there this week. Let’s hope they’ll be in relaxed mode. A home win but not by too many I hope!
St Clears v Llangwm
Again, strangely, the reverse fixture of last week. Both teams are safe and I think it will be another win for St Clears.
Swansea Uplands v Pembroke Dock Harlequins
The Quins seem to have finished the season early. They need to travel with a decent team and a good attitude if they’re not going to ship a lot of points. A home win.
