Runs galore as ‘Fossils’ beat ‘Vets’

Pembrokeshire Vets and Worcestershire Fossils

Pembrokeshire Vets (201 for 4) lost to Worcestershire Fossils (203 for 3) by 7 wickets

Venue: Llechryd CC
Umpire: Neil Croucher
Scorer: Will Newell (Llechryd)

The picturesque cricket ground in Llechryd was the venue for a friendly match between a 'Pembrokeshire Veterans’ side organised by their Welsh international bowler Peter Betterley on his home ground against a squad of old timers on tour from Worcestershire named 'The Fossils'.

The visitors were on a four-match tour, having previously lost at Aberystwyth and Llandyssul, and due to finish off their four matches at Machen, near Caerphilly, the following day – and they were clearly impressed by the attractive ground and also the warmth of the welcome.

Good Vets’ batting by Rees and Harris

They also enjoyed the quality of the pitch because they successfully chased down the Pembrokeshire total of 201 for 4, made from 40 overs, with wickets and overs in hand as batsmen had to retire when they reached 50 and no bowler could bowl more than nine overs.

Having to retire for Pembrokeshire were quality batsmen Richard Harries (50) and Lyn Rees (50), who were ably assisted by Ian Batteley (30) and Ben Graham (21) before Steve Jones (19 not out) and Leighton O’Connor were still there at the end after Tony Pasternak (9) and Mike Johns (10) had both departed.

Leading the way for the Fossils in their bowling attack were Martin Woodward (3 for 29 in 8 overs) and Chris Rawlings (1 for 35 in seven overs).

Fossils’ successfully chase down target

The Fossils also had useful batting from Colin Hobbs and Kevin Gilbert, who retired with respective scores of 51 and 52, whilst Martin Woodward was run out for 33, Derek Ebbings contributed 12 before he was bowled by Ian Batterley and after Richard Brown was bowled by Ben Graham for a first-ball duck it was Keith Middleton who steered them towards victory with a solid 36 not out, before Liz Dean came in to hit the winning boundary.

To be fair to the County Vets they gave almost the whole team a chance to take wickets and their figures were as follows:
Malcolm McHugh (0-32 in 4 overs); Nick Evans (0-27 in 5 overs); Lyn Rees (0-25 in 5 overs); Steve Jones (0-17 in 5 overs); Brian Griffiths (0-10 in 2 overs); Ian Batterley (1 for 17 in 6 overs); Peter Betterley (0 for 22 in 5 overs); Richard Harries 2 for 13 in 9 overs), Ben Graham (1 for 30 in 4 overs).
