The Osprey Sea Angling Club, based in Pembroke Dock, recently held its annual open beach fishing competition, or ‘Flatfish Festival, to give it its other more descriptive name at Amroth, its traditional home.

92 anglers, including four ladies and three juniors, from north of Cardigan to east of the Severn Crossing, turned out to support the club for which the Osprey club members and organisers are very grateful.
34 anglers, eight fewer than 2013, including two ladies and one Junior, weighed in 19 flounder, same as last year, one codling and 22 lesser spotted dogfish; not quite the dog fest of 2013 (41).

Other fish were caught, both undersize and smaller so not weighed in, as the anglers either realised they were on the small side or, if their pair’s partner had not caught, then they were out in that category, as both anglers had to weigh in for their score to count.

Milford Haven’s Roly stars

The winner was a local angler from Milford Haven, Roly Adams, with four flounder for 1 Kg 635gms. Second, from Swansea, was Peter Evans, with a lesser spotted dogfish weighing 980gms, the heaviest fish of the day, for which second prize was up for grabs. Third place was another local and Osprey Club chairman Andrew Skeels from Pembroke, a previous winner, with three flounder for 1Kg 250gms.

Top lady was Alison George, again from Milford with a dogfish of 655gms and top junior was yet another local Milford boy, David Townsend, with a dogfish and a flounder for 855gms. One other lady, Sandra Thompson also weighed in.

Roly doubles up with Dai as pairs champs

The pair’s competition was won by Roly Adams and his partner Dai Etherington, also from Milford, with a total of six flounder for 2Kg 230gms. In second, winner of the pairs in 2013, was Haydn Cole (Lamphey and Osprey club member) but this time with his son Scott as his partner, both catching dogfish for a combined weight of 1Kg 760gms.

Finally, thanks must go to Roger Harries of the Amroth Arms for, once again, accommodating us and also to our sponsors who donated raffle prizes to further help support the club. These were Shane Tucker, Mark Goodall of West Wales Angling in Pembroke Dock, Steve Parry, Martin and Sandra Thompson of Anglers Corner in Milford Haven, James Lemon of Awesome Fishing in Dale, Julian & Sue from Classic Carpets in Kilgetty, Gwyn Davies and Roger Harries.
