Pembroke Dock Bowling Club Open Week Success

Pembroke Dock Bowling Club Open Week Success
This year’s Open Week tournament at Pembroke Dock Bowling Club was blessed with exceptional weather until finals day on Saturday 13th June 2015, when the heavens decided to open and down came the rain but the weather did not dampen the spectators and players enthusiasm for the game of bowls.

Indeed, three excellent finals took place with some superb bowling considering the weather conditions.

Superb overall organisation, on and off the green

The event was once again well organised and run by Gerard Thomas of PDBC, who did a wonderful job keeping the schedule of play ticking over, creating an excellent spectacle for spectators.

The groundsmen must be congratulated on maintaining the green in tip top condition and were praised by visiting bowlers and club members for their sterling work in making the bowling week such a success.

The ladies of Pembroke Dock Bowling Club once again excelled in the catering department, which is second to none within the bowling fraternity.

Anniversaries celebrated with excellent bowling

Pembroke Dock Bowling Club is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year and it is also the 70th anniversary of open week.

The two main trophies with the Alfred Phillips Bowl and the Sudbury Bowl, with the Texaco Shield played for by bowlers eliminated from the earlier rounds of the main trophies.

Some exceptional bowling throughout the week saw Richard Hissey of PDBC competing in two finals.  In his first final, playing for the Alfred Phillips Bowl, he came up against Ken Edwards of PDBC, with Ken coming out the winner in a very close game of bowls by 21 – 18.

In his second final, playing for the Sudbury Bowl, Richard Hissey came up against the defending winner from the previous year, Richard Jones of PDBC, with Richard Jones coming out the winner in another very close encounter 21 – 19.

Hugh wins consolation prize

The final of the Texaco Shield saw Hugh Colley of PDBC up against John Archer of Milford Haven Bowling Club.  Both players played exceptionally well with Hugh eventually running out the winner 21 -13.

Special mention must go to Paul Griffiths of PDBC, who being a new bowler, joining the club in April of this year, played exceptionally well all week, taking a few scalps of experienced bowlers on his way to the semi-final of the Alfred Phillips Bowl.

The presentation of the trophies was carried out by the President of PDBC, Mrs Diana Davies, and the club chairman, Mr Alan Yea – and there was a superb buffet and raffle to cap off an excellent week of high-quality bowls.
