Pembroke County Cricket Club - Division 3 pre-season preview

Nigel DelaneyBack in 2019, Division 3 was a hotly contested league that saw promotion and relegation battles go down to the final day, and here at Pembrokeshire Sport we envisage it being equally tight this time around.

Cresselly 2nds and Johnston, a side who have frequented the top two tiers for some considerable time, came down from Division 2 in 2019.

Through the likes of Neal Williams though, the Doves still boast a good blend of youth and experience and will be in the mix to go back up. Johnston did struggle for players at the tail end of their last campaign, but relegation and the chance to be more competitive can often reinvigorate a team. Gary James and Leigh Walters have re-signed and it remains to be seen how the club reacts.

St Ishmaels 2nds and Neyland 2nds will be the new additions from Division 4. Tish come up as champions and continued the momentum last year by reaching the Alec Colley final. Through the likes of Kevin Bowen, Robbie Thomas, and Steve Williams, they have the know-how to make sure their stay in the third tier isn’t a short one. Neyland too possess experience through the likes of Lyn Rees, but skipper Paul Miller also has promising youngsters to call upon and they too can make an impact on the league.

Llanrhian were third two years ago and have won back to back Alan Brown Cups. They’ll be skippered by Nigel Delaney this time around and have added Jonathan Strawbridge to their ranks, while although Stackpole have lost talented young player George Smith, they too can potentially challenge if they can consistently field their best XI.

The same applies to Laugharne, who were in the running in 2019 before fading in the final weeks, and they made the Alan Brown final last year. Narberth 2nds, Llangwm 2nds, and Haverfordwest 3rds all have enough to trouble sides, but the strength of their line ups will often depend on who is selected at first (or in The Town’s case second) team level.

All in all, this should be a competitive league. Last time Cresselly were in Division 3, they bounced back as champions so we’ll tip them to do the same this time around. A host of others could be hot on their heels though.
