Haverfordwest County put on a five-star display as they comfortably overcame Welsh League Division Three Newport City to progress in the Nathaniel MG Cup at the Ogi Bridge Meadow in their first game of the domestic season.
The Bluebirds led 2-0 at the break and they scored three further goals without reply, bagging the goals for the Bluebirds were Ben Fawcett with a brace plus one a piece for Dan Hawkins, Ben Ahmun and Corey Shephard.
Fawcett opened the scoring in the 38
th minute as he profited close range following a Hawkins free kick which was nodded on by Elliot Scotcher for the striker who made no mistake from close range.
A minute later and the hosts doubled the lead as Iori Humphreys cross was met with a simple far posts finish by Hawkins.
On the hour mark the hosts bagged their third of the tie when Shephard’s pinpoint cross found Ahmun who made no mistake close range for the striker’s third goal in consecutive games.
In the 73
rd minute Fawcett scored with a terrific edge of the area strike after excellent build up play between Ricky Watts and Shephard set up the striker for his second of the tie for goal number four.
Two minutes later livewire Shephard added a well worked fifth, the midfielder had already provided two assists before he profited from a fine left footed.
Late in the game the visitors carved open their best scoring chance of the tie as substitute George Kabza cut in from the left and struck a first time shot straight to Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Ifan Knott who gathered comfortably.
This coming Friday evening, August 8
th, Haverfordwest County entertain Penybont in their opening game of the JD Cymru Premier season.
