Merlins Bridge Youth won a tense West Wales Youth Plate Final on penalties for the first time in the club’s history, which was staged at Richmond Park, home of Carmarthen Town.

It’s been a terrific journey for the Wizards on the road to the final as they were held to 1-1 after full and extra time, but they held their nerve to claim victory in a tense penalty shootout.

Bridge coach Kevin Thomas was a proud man at the final whistle, he’s built a talented team of which many of them have already played for the Bridge senior teams.

The Neath based team Rhos who were a strong outfit really played their part in a tight 120 minutes of competitive game.

In the 62^nd minute Jacob Humphreys struck first blood for Rhos who broke the deadlock, but the young Wizards equalised twelve minutes later as sustained pressure saw the Neath outfit concede an own goal.

There were no further goals after full and extra time period, so it was down to the dreaded penalties which the Bridge kept their composure as they edged it to lift the coveted Plate.
