Barry Town United 3 – Haverfordwest County 2

Captain Clayton Green slotted in a late penalty to earn Barry Town United a dramatic victory against luckless Haverfordwest County at Jenner Park.

This game was highly entertaining, it was Green who also opened the scoring, only for Ben Fawcett to strike twice, which gave the visitors a narrow 2-1 half time cushion. It was end-to-end in the second half before Chris Hugh equalised, then both teams went in search of a winner, but it was Green who grabbed a late penalty for his second goal of the night, helping his side nick the points, but matters got worse for Haverfordwest County when they were down to ten men as defender Jazz Richards was issued a straight red card for foul abusive language.
 

Early chances

The visitors had the better of the first half as Corey Shephard and Fawcett both went close with early chances.

Haverfordwest County continued to press as Alhagi Touray Sisay set-up co striker Fawcett who narrowly missed the target with a low drive.

However, it was the hosts who took the lead as Green made no mistake from inside the box.
 

Fawcett struck twice

Three minutes later the Bluebirds equalised; which was their first goal in the league this season, a cracking far-post cross was knocked back into the danger zone by Shephard - and it was Fawcett who reacted quickest to bang the ball into the net.

Two minutes later Touray Sisay headed home from inside the box, but it was frustratedly disallowed as the linesman flagged for offside.

On the stroke of half time the Bluebirds took a 2-1 lead as Fawcett struck a 25-yard rocket which flew in the top corner and the slender half time lead was no more than  the visitors deserved.

Five minutes after the interval saw the visitors carve an opening for Henry Jones but the midfielder’s low drive was tipped wide by Mike Lewis.

Rhys Cavanagh headed over the crossbar for the homesters from a corner, whicht was a decent chance.

On the hour mark the visitors appeaedl for a penalty as Touray Sisay was wrestled to the ground, but the referee waved play on.
 

Hugh levels matters

The hosts equalised in the 63^rd minute as the Bluebirds defence got caught napping when Chris Hugh made them pay as he buried his close-range effort.

Barry nearly took the lead as a header from Cooper’s cross was desperately cleared off the line.

Lewis pulled off another decent save in the Barry goal to deny the luckless Touray Sisay who struck a terrific volley.

At this stage the game was open and it looked as though either side could nick it.
 

Bluebirds pay the penalty

In the 89^th minute Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Lee Idzi took down a player, but it was Jazz Richards who was issued a straight red card, but no complaints it was a stonewall penalty which was coolly converted by Green to secure the points for Barry’s second win on the trot.

So Wayne Jones’ Haverfordwest County are still awaiting their first win as they disappointingly have only a point from the first four games of the campaign.

Haverfordwest County chairman Rob Edwards summed up the mood in the Bluebirds camp after the final whistle when he tweeted:

“Hard to take. Second year running we leave Barry with no points as the better side. Small margins yet again. Two excellent performances in four days, but nothing to show for it. Results will come.”

This Saturday, September 4^th, Haverfordwest County entertain Brecon Corries in the Welsh Cup, kick off 2pm.
