Llangwm gain stunning victory at Cresselly to reach Duggie Morris Cup semis

Steve Inward on way to another big score

D.R. Morris Cup Quarter Finals:

Cresselly (100 for 7) lost to Llangwm (113 for 1) by 9 wickets

Umpires: Arthur Brady & Trefor Evans
Scorer: Teagan Cartwright (Cresselly)

Joe Phillips took two wickets for LlangwmSecond-division Llangwm caused a few shock waves as they beat a Cresselly side currently third in the top echelon; not only by their win but by the fact that they were playing away, plus the margin of victory and the overs left at the finish.

To be fair to Cresselly they showed a positive approach at the outset as they elected to bat first but none of their ‘big guns’ were able to fire sufficiently well to build a total that would put pressure on Llangwm.

Mike Venables came in to the side and top-scored with 24 as only Simon Cole (17), Dan James (19), Ryan Lewis and Alex Bayley (13 apiece) managed double figures.

Llangwm bowling and fielding are key factors . . .

It is also fair to say that Llangwm’s main strength is considered to be their very lengthy batting line-up but on this occasion it was their bowling attack that was the basis for success as they restricted the home side to such a lowly score as Joe Phillips (2 for 22) and Chris Inward (2 for 22) spear-headed their attack, with support from Noah Davies (1 for 16).

Their fielding was also good as they claimed two run outs by Phil Llewellyn (from a direct hit) and skipper Matthew Kiff.

. . . But batting is tip-top too!

Cresselly needed a great start with the ball to have any chance of winning but Llangwm openers Will Beresford and Joe Kiff quickly put on 33 in good time before the former was caught by Simon Cole off Tom Arthur as part of his 1 for 30 spell.

But there was to be no further success for Cresselly as Kiff had four fours and two sixes in his 39 not out and Steve Inward continued his fantastic form with an unbeaten 46 that included five fours and a six as they reached their target in the 17th over.

Shaun Whitfield led Carew with ball and bat

Whitfield leads Carew to hard-earned victory

Narberth (124 all out) lost to Carew (146 for 8) by 22 runs

Umpires: Jon Willington & Allan Hansen
Scorers: Gwyneth Johns & Julie Davies

Lewis Hough bowled really wellShaun Whitfield certainly led Carew by example at the Lewis Lloyd Ground as he featured well in their batting and then claimed three early wickets to break the back of the Narberth batting – so although the home side fought hard they were never able to recover from that poor start.

Whitfield scored 24, including 14 off three successive deliveries, alongside Luke Hicks (25), Nick Davies (12), Louis Hicks (16), Nick Scourfield (16), Rhys Davies (10) and Gareth Lewis (17), with enough sixes and fours overall to ensure a challenging tally of 146 for 8 wickets.

Hough bowls superbly for Narberth . . . but Whitfield causes damage too!

For Narberth, Lewis Hough was in tremendous form as he bowled from the old Mart Ground End – and his 4 for 15 was a fair reflection of his performance, with skipper Ben Hughes (2 for 18) and Matthew Johns (1 for 41).

To be fair to the home side they did well to move from 32 for 3 to 99 before they lost a fourth wicket, with Jordan Howell striking well for his 38, which included two fours and a six and opener Richard Adam called upon his wealth of experience to top score with 45 (three fours and a six) – but once they departed only Ben Quartermaine managed double figures.

For Carew, Whitfield ended his four-over stint with 3-20 and Rhys Davies claimed 3 for 23 – but their best figures came from Sam Harts, recently transferred from neighbours Cresselly and showing his worth with a  4 for 25 haul from his 3.2 overs.

Also worthy of a mention was Max Brindley, who came on a sub and took three excellent catches as Narberth were dismissed 24 runs short with four balls of their allotted overs left.

The remaining two quarter-finals, where Lawrenny entertain Neyland, and Whitland play host to Kilgetty, have been postponed because of bad weather – and will hopefully be played tonight (Friday) subject to the inclement weather changing!
