Lawrenny marched into the D.R.Morris Cup final at the expense of a Llangwm side which decided to field first but were unable to prevent their opponents getting off to a flying start and then unable to do the same thing when they went in to bat.

On a superb batting track and lightning-quick outfield at Imble Lane, the Lawrenny ‘big guns’ like Kurtis and Kyle Marsh, Ryan Morton and Harry Thomas all fired but for Llangwm only Joe Kiff and especially Steve Inward ever got going.

Perhaps one of the biggest factors was that Morton came in at No 3 with Lawrenny already doing well and blasted five fours and a six in his first over – and then grabbed 4 for 11 in his four overs to claim the man of the match tag.

Marsh boys start with a bang – and Morton slams 26 in an over

But it was Kurtis and Kyle Marsh who got the game off to a bang, sending boundaries to all areas of the ground as they sped past 50 in the sixth over and were looking good on 70 when Joe Phillips bowled Kyle for 40, including 14 runs in one three-ball spell and with six fours and two big sixes to his name.

Ryan Morton then blasted his 26 runs in one over but then departed, but with the Lawrenny run-rate being boosted to over 11 an over – and Kurtis Marsh departed on 114 with six boundaries and a maximum in his 44 before he edged a Chris Inward delivery to keeper Luke Brock

Harry Thomas also chipped in with a hard-hitting 30 (five fours) but with Chris Inward ending with excellent figures of 3 for 25 alongside Phillips (1 for 27), Mills (1 for 15) and Matthew Kiff (1 for 19) as Llangwm deserved credit for the way they had battled back when a score on excess of 200 looked likely at one time.

Kurtis Marsh on the attack

Disappointing start to Llangwm reply

But Llangwm needed a good start to be able to chase down that score but didn’t get it as Rob Williams opened with a maiden for Lawrenny and in a total mix up Noah Davies was left stranded and run out without scoring.

Again it says something for Llangwm resolve that Joe Kiff and Steve Inward set about repairing the damage but when Kiff was caught for 29 (two fours and a six) by James Buckle off Kurtis Marsh there were further problems since Steve Mills (4), Luke Brock (5) and Chris Inward (11) were all removed in a key spell by Morton, who finished with a match-killing haul of 4 for 11 as he also shifted Phil Llewellyn.

Steve Inward reached 49 (five fours and a six) but was removed by Harry Thomas with the aid of a Thomas Cole catch and Jamie Lewis claimed the final wicket, that of Ollie Davies, before Richard Brock and Joe Phillips remained not out at the end but still with Llangwm a massive 60 runs short of their target – but with the chance to still seal promotion back to the top echelon as reward what has already been a very good season.

For Lawrenny, there is still a chance of them taking the division one silverware and now a Duggie Morris Final appearance against neighbours Carew in what should be a cracking finale to this excellent competition on its traditional home ground of Oatfield Park, Burton, on Sunday, 18th July.
